Need help choosing colour for dining chair and bar stool!

Hi All,

I'm furnishing my newly purchased apartment and I'm having trouble deciding on colours for my barstool, dining chairs and coffee table.

My kitchen bench is white all around. There is a RED splash on the cabinets but I'm planning to replace the red with dark grey or white.

I'm going for a very contemporary holiday apartment look.

This is what I have purchased so far:

Dark Grey Sofas
3 seater + 2 seater GREY fabric sofa.

White round Dining Table

White round table from Ikea

Q. Should I stick with white dining chairs with my white table and white bar stool with my white bench? I will be using decorations & pillows to create accent colours.

I did impulsively purchase these black chairs because it was cheap but I'm really don't like it.

Bonus Q: Would it be weird to mix 'wooden legged' furniture with my sofa which has metal legs?

Tania, do you like the Eames dining chairs? There are replicas which are reasonably priced and I think they would look great with your white Tulip table. I've attached a photo. These have timber legs, but they are also available with metal legs.

As to your query about mixing timber furniture in your living room, by all means do as it will bring instant warmth into the room and they go well together.

I'll look at bar stools next. Hope this helps. BTW, love your apartment! Cheers!

Also, would you consider an area rug in the living room, one with some colour injected into it? Perhaps some red like what's in your kitchen?

sounds like lots of colour going on. What colour are your window treatments? what about timber chairs which pick up the flooring & colour in your bench top (stained IKEA style or bentwood) & then some grey accessories... its about your eye matching the same colour for uniformity. does that assist.

If it was my choice I'd go with the green option to avoid a room that is all shades of orange. Also, chrome or timber. Although chrome does remind me a bit of the 1980s.

A glass dinning table with dark timber legs in a X cross look in the middle of table will be ideal . You can still see the beautiful floor tiles and the dark timber legs will look amazing over the grey tiles. Have full fabric greyish brown chairs with same leg as the table.

Agree grey fabric not so practical for both the above reasons. The white ones look fine and the timber could tie in with your table and bench. But a colour could be good too. Could tie it in with accessories in your kitchen? Artwork? Depends if you're after a more sophisticated, neutral-type colour scheme, or perhaps something with a bit more character/fun. Cheaper stools that will withstand little kid treatment are ideal, and you can always update and change the look if they get wrecked and you want a more grown-up look down the track. Fabulous-looking kitchen by the way :) Enjoy your new home.

I do quite like those chairs! Would they be comfortable sitting on and from what store?

Rug -
Yes, am willing to put a rug in the living room but I'll be removing the red splash back in my kitchen. Im not a fan of red.

Mixing timber/steel

The only thing that's steel is the foot of my sofas. Should my coffee table be white/steel or white/wood to suit? perhaps I should put this in a separate discussion board.

If you've purchased grey sofas Tania, it would be good to carry a shade of this darker colour to the other end of the room, using it on the dining chairs. The table legs can either be white or chrome.

The chrome element can then be carried to your barstools, which would, in my opinion, look best white - unless you decide to introduce a wooden element into the room (ie on the chair legs).

Definately use a rug to 'zone' the living area though. A pale one will make the narrow room look bigger than using a dark one.

Some vibrant rug ideas , you ca use timber anywhere you like. If you can save for a better tulip table then IKEA.

Grey with grey legs:

This one can be spun 45 degrees.

Light Grey - It looks good with a dark table but may be too pale with a white table?

Coffee table - introducing wood

I'm thinking of purchasing this coffee table with wooden leg. If I do would it still look be good with the dark grey dining chairs?

White with wooden legs

The only thing I'm worried about is dirtying it. (my apartment will be half rented out and lived in)

Love the table and chairs with wooden legs, they'd definitely add warmth and make your room look less clinical. The Ikea table is good, as you can fit more chairs around a pedestal base (tulip style). Don't worry about it being white, as dirt wipes off high gloss fairly easily. The chairs with the wooden legs will work with the Ikea table and the wooden legged coffee table. Pair those up with either white barstools or 'tractor seat' wooden ones.

Have you considered a glass topped coffee table with a wooden base?

You can buy replica Noguchi style coffee tables quite cheaply now. The glass top is great for smaller spaces and your eye goes 'through them'.

My Home Stylist - I really appreciate your feedback. The Noguchi coffee is really nice. I think I'm getting closer to finalising the colours. I've done my research and found these. Do you think they match?

Coffee table

I did my research and found something similar to the noguchi coffee table but in white (thought it'll suit the white ikea table). It's aFreedom's Stockholm table .
Dining Chairs

I really love the chairs with timber legs but I've decided that since my apartment will be occasionally rented out I'll stick with a more conservative look.

Dark Grey frabic will match my sofa. The steel........

Bar Stool:

Now that I have chosen a dark grey/steel leg dining chairs and an oak based coffee table, would a standard white barstool with steel leg still work well with everything else or is it starting to clash?

I found some possible but more expensive options if it's starting to clash:

You didn't mention before that your place would be rented out , in that case don't spend to much on designer furniture, IKEA would do, I like your choice of chairs , dark grey, and coffee table . looks like you're almost there.

The top barstools would probably work better, as the wood on them looks the same colour as the coffee table legs. Be careful not the mix dark and lighter coloured woods on different pieces of furniture.

Nice work Tania, your choices look good! Love to see it once it's all in the room together!! I would maybe go a bar stool with some wood on it to texture to that area and also tie in with your coffee table! :-)

I know I'm coming in a bit late here but when i read you might be renting it, I thought you might be interested in these indoor/outdoor cushions. They are super soft but water resistant - great for renters, and they might add some personality to the space. They are my own design ;)
