MALVERN | WATTLE HOUSE Front garden Design | Stone Masonry Restoration | Colour selection The client brief was to design a new fence and entrance including garden, restoration of the façade including verandah of this old beauty. This gorgeous 115 year old, villa required extensive renovation to the façade, timberwork and verandah. Withing this design our client wanted a new, very generous entrance where she could greet her broad circle of friends and family. Our client requested a modern take on the ‘old’ and she wanted every plant she has ever loved, in her new garden, as this was to be her last move. Jill is an avid gardener at age 82, she maintains her own garden and each plant has special memories and she wanted a garden that represented her many gardens in the past, plants from friends and plants that prompted wonderful stories. In fact, a true ‘memory garden’. The garden is peppered with deciduous trees, perennial plants that give texture and interest, annuals and plants that flower throughout the seasons. We were given free rein to select colours and finishes for the colour palette and hardscaping. However, one constraint was that Jill wanted to retain the terrazzo on the front verandah. Whilst on a site visit we found the original slate from the verandah in the back garden holding up the raised vegetable garden. We re-purposed this and used them as steppers in the front garden. To enhance the design and to encourage bees and birds into the garden we included a spun copper dish from Mallee Design. A garden that we have had the very great pleasure to design and bring to life. A complete transformation - from a dark, sloped garden with a bomb shelter taking up the sunniest part (and nearly half) of the garden to a sunny, colourful and contemporary city courtyard garden with lots of lush planting in raised sleeper beds, a green roof on a modern shed, black limestone paving and bespoke decking that carries you from the kitchen straight out into the garden.

A very small courtyard space transformed into a welcoming cosy garden retreat to relax in and to share with friends. The courtyard includes a Western Red Cedar bench, rendered raised planters, a composite Millboard deck, laser cut back-lit metal wall panels, highly ornate patterned porcelain paving and calming atmospheric planting. This garden won the BALI 2024 Award for best small garden space.

Mr Horner contacted The New Driveway Company to replace and extend his drive with a new block driveway in Garsington, Oxford. The job would involve lots of digging to completely overhaul the front garden and driveway area – which we happily agreed to! The drive is located on a steep gradient with a tight entrance space which meant that access was limited and slightly tricky. We began by removing the existing driveway and part of the front garden to create room for the new larger driveway. After digging the foundations of the driveway we laid a weedproof membrane to stop pesky weeds growing between the blocks in the future. The driveway was created with Bradstone Woburn Rumbled Autumn blocks, we built a retaining wall down one side of the drive using sleepers. To finish we created new front steps leading up to the front door.

The front garden of this period Edwardian property in Acton, west London, was a large expanse of concrete hard standing, and overgrown planting. The aim of the garden design was to create a garden that combined space for off-street parking for one car, architectural soft landscaping as well as a spot in which to sit and enjoy the garden. The style of the new garden had to be sympathetic to the house and it was important that the end result was more contemporary front garden than everyday driveway. Additional screening to the neigbouring boundary wall was a key requirement, as was the need to keep an existing cherry tree.

After - the front garden is transformed into a walkthrough welcoming space, delineated with hedging in concentric circles pulsing out from a central circle of porphyry setts. The remaining space is softened with low maintenance planting emerging from the gravel mulch and roses and scented climbers soften the blank walls. .

We had a wonderful opportunity to create an unusual planting in the heart of London. Working with our client we decided to create a contrast between her tall townhouse in Kensington Square, and a soft slightly wild planting design. Within lead planters we used Stipa grass with chocolate Cosmos and dark purple Heuchera, it had the feel of a meadow but with more of an edge! We then inter-planted Queen of the Night Tulips for Spring interest. In other areas, we installed Buxus ball topiary of differing sizes to give a cloud effect. We also used good quality artificial Buxus in bespoke planters in a really dark and shady rear terrace.

Central courtyard forms the main secluded space, capturing northern sun while protecting from the south westerly windows off the ocean. Large sliding doors create visual links through the study and dining spaces from front to rear.
