Breaker Street Kitchen Project Coastal Apartment Renovation – Main Beach Our clients engaged us to redesign their apartment kitchen to bring in more light, functionality, and a timeless coastal elegance. The brief was to create a refined space that felt calm and connected to the surrounding ocean views while enhancing everyday usability and storage. Cabinetry The cabinetry features a classic Shaker-style profile finished in 2pac satin white, delivering a clean and enduring aesthetic. To complement the bright palette, brushed brass hardware was selected for a subtle touch of sophistication. Open timber shelving in Polytec Boston Oak Woodmatt introduces warmth and texture, tying beautifully with the timber flooring and coastal-inspired décor. All cabinetry was custom-built to maximise every inch of available space, including full-height storage and a dedicated appliance nook. Benchtops & Splashback The benchtops are Caesarstone Aterra Blanca, chosen for their soft veining and high durability. The same material was extended up the wall as a full-height splashback, creating a seamless, luxurious finish that reflects natural light throughout the room. The large L-shaped breakfast bar provides generous preparation space and breakfast seating, enhancing the kitchen’s social and practical design. Appliances & Fixtures The layout was planned around a combination of integrated and freestanding appliances to suit the client’s cooking and entertaining style. Inclusions feature: • Double wall ovens and induction cooktop • French-door refrigerator • Dishdrawer dishwasher • Undermount butler’s sink with brushed brass mixer • Built-in wine fridge and coffee station Lighting & Styling Under-cabinet LED lighting adds functional task illumination, while minimal white ceiling lights maintain a crisp, uncluttered look. The overall styling embraces soft coastal textures. Design & Functionality Every element of this kitchen was designed to feel spacious, light, and effortlessly functional. Clever storage solutions and well-proportioned benches ensure ease of use without compromising aesthetics. The result is a calm, coastal-inspired kitchen that seamlessly blends modern convenience with timeless style — perfect for apartment living and entertaining alike.

Millers Reimagined

Lorena GaxiolaLorena Gaxiola
Nestled within Sydney’s historic Millers Point, this 1860s Victorian terrace has been reimagined as a serene family sanctuary—where patina-rich surfaces meet contemporary elegance. The curated interiors tell a story of history-infused maximalism, where every layer reveals a detail in service of heritage, emotion, and craft. Lorena Gaxiola’s poetic vision was to celebrate the family’s tri-cultural identity through salvaged timbers, artisanal finishes, and restrained yet expressive craftsmanship. From reinstated cornices to hand-finished brass accents and kauri floorboards, each intervention evokes a dialogue between past and present. Realising that vision required deft navigation of significant constraints: extensive structural damage from decades of water ingress and termites, heritage restrictions that demanded visual continuity, and tight access that challenged the logistics of modern construction. As designers, we oversaw every detail—from heritage review and documentation to construction coordination and bespoke installations. Threading new electrical, climate, and plumbing systems through fragile timber bones took surgical precision. Yet the results were seamless: original chandeliers revived, floorboards restored or matched with reclaimed timber, and American oak joinery paired with brass trims and marble mosaics brought new life to tired volumes. Design decisions were driven by sustainability, narrative, and craftsmanship. Custom pieces were commissioned from masters in their field—such as Lowe Furniture’s bespoke creations and a custom mural by Indigenous artist Danie Mellor, which pays homage to the family’s cultural roots. Each space was approached with emotion and intentionality, particularly the bathrooms which the client described simply and joyfully as: “The bathrooms make me happy.” Every room in the home unfolds like a story—patterned tiles, textured stone, and layered materials come together to offer intimate moments of discovery. Our commitment extended from spatial planning to final flourishes. We handled styling, soft furnishing installation, custom window treatments, and every curated object. Furniture was sourced locally, materials were salvaged when possible, and thoughtful detailing elevated every corner. The result is a timeless, emotionally resonant home—one that celebrates craftsmanship, elevates functionality, and preserves a precious piece of Sydney’s architectural legacy for generations to come.

The tall run of cabinets is a striking and functional feature in this kitchen. At each end, the two double-door cupboards are dedicated crockery cupboards with fluted glass doors that open to reveal beautifully crafted oak interiors with matching oak shelves, perfect for organizing and displaying tableware. The two central doors are cleverly designed as 'secret doors' that lead directly into the walk-in pantry, blending seamlessly with the surrounding cabinetry. Adding to the practicality and charm, a ladder rail runs across the cabinetry, allowing easy access to the top cupboards where the homeowners store less frequently used items like vases. The cabinetry is painted in Little Greene 'Three Farm Green' adorned by Armac Martin handles in burnished brass.

We designed this bespoke hand-made galley kitchen, which allows the client to make the best use of the space and have something high quality that will last forever. The brass accents including the brass bridge tap adds warmth to the space. We knocked open that wall to put in wall-to-wall bi-folding doors so you can have an indoor-outdoor kitchen (when the weather is good!) to enlarge the space. Photographer: Nick George

This period property was full of original features, not least the exposed wooden beams and posts, which needed to be incorporated into the design. It’s hard to decide which features stand out most - the central island, wrapped carefully around the wooden pillar; the original fireplace, now home to a range cooker and antique-finish mirrored splashback; the gorgeous dresser unit, with butler’s pantry and double door larder; or the fridge and wine rack cleverly fitted under the stairs. It was all finished with a Quooker boiling tap and hardware by Crofts & Assinder. The spacious utility was fitted with a dog shower for the clients’ two much-loved pets. A mixture of open shelving and floor-to-ceiling cabinets in this room allowed the client to maximise the storage space and we included a handy bench seat and coat hooks close to the back door - providing easy access after those wet dog walks! All projects require careful coordination between designer, project manager, builder, their trades, our fitter and, of course, the client, but none more so than this one - that this one went so smoothly is testament to the hard work and teamwork from everyone involved. Kitchen colours: island in Little Greene Pompeiian Ash, rest of the cabinetry in Little Greene Rolling Fog. This amazing kitchen and utility room formed part of a much larger, whole-house renovation, managed by Paul Butcher of JRB Building Ltd.
