Gubbins Rose House

The Gubbins Rose House is a thoughtful renovation and first-floor addition to a compact inner-city home in Sydney’s Inner West. The project balances the demands of a growing family with the constraints of a tight suburban site, creating a flexible and light-filled home that opens to its surroundings.

The upper level introduces two new bedrooms, a bathroom, and a study nook beneath a dynamic skillion roof, clad in warm timber and elevated above the original structure. Downstairs, the existing plan was reworked to enhance flow and connection to a new north-facing deck—offering seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor living.

Carefully proportioned openings, layered screening, and considered material choices lend the house both privacy and presence, while respecting the surrounding streetscape. The result is a modest yet confident home, tailored to contemporary family life.
