9. Storage for a queen Unlike kitchens and bathrooms where homeowners are well versed with the virtues of drawers over cupboards, the laundry is lagging in receiving the memo. There’s no such thing as too much storage, so try to dedicate every spare millimetre of your laundry to drawers, open shelving, cupboards and hanging space à la this great Aussie design from Wilson & Bradley.
8. Direct outdoor access This, my friends, may be simple, but the simple things are often the best. Ensuring outdoor access from your laundry can, if it’s possible, lessen your reliance on tumble dryers and prevent high moisture levels in your home. Plus, if you have the space, you may be able to work in some mudroom-style inclusions to store boots, sports equipment and more. Win-win.
If you’re up for a more radical rethink of your laundry sorting system, ask your architect, designer or builder to include integrated cabinetry to store and separate laundry. There are many different systems available, so save images of ones that will work for you, such as this integrated double hamper in a Sydney laundry from Provincial Kitchens. When deciding how many hampers you need, take stock of the types of clothes you wash. Separating garments into lights, brights and darks generally works a treat. Alternatively, if you wash shirts or delicates separately, you may wish to give them a hamper of their own.
1. Space savers A single glass screen in front of the shower and bath can prevent your bathroom from looking too small by allowing views right to the end of the room. This approach also allows the bath and shower (and plumbing) to be placed close together. The set-up usually relies on a floor that drains to a single grate (often one that’s positioned next to the glass shower screen or in the middle of the wet-zone enclosure, such as here) to ensure water doesn’t pool around the floor of the bath.
6. Triple the benefits with a green pergola If you have space for a pergola you can dress up with lush climbing plants, you will be able to keep an area of your home cool and enjoy a shady place to relax outside in the midday heat. A pergola can also double as a parasol, protecting the wall from direct sunlight, while preventing the interior of your home from overheating. Depending on where your pergola is sited, you may decide to train climbing plants only up the posts or let them grow up and along the overhead structure too.

2. Carve out a spot for gentle exercise Making space outdoors for “decompressing, playing and reconnecting” was a central theme in A Garden Sanctuary by Hamptons (pictured), designed by Tony Woods. The small deck area outside the charred-wood cabin was used during the show as a place for yoga, meditation and gentle movement. Although this garden also included trees and flowing water for an immersive experience, the idea could be translated into a much smaller space. Just carving out a quiet, shady corner with enough space for a yoga mat and introducing some greenery nearby would bring a similar feeling to a garden of any size.
