The custom mahogany door with extra-large glazing and accompanying transom adds light and a view of the surrounding countryside. The bold red color on the door (Heritage Red by Benjamin Moore) gives off a modern vibe and the 11-foot ceilings elevate the space, Crisp says. The V-groove walls (painted in Decorator’s White by Benjamin Moore) and ceiling add texture and contrast against the dark-stained wood floors. Info for the red door. Designer: Patti Wilson of Patti Wilson Design Inc. Location: Newmarket, Ontario, Canada Size: 231 square feet (21 square meters); 11 by 21 feet Homeowners’ request. Make the dining room feel more cohesive with the nearby living room and kitchen, which are modern farmhouse style. Main feature. Poplar shiplap painted in Oxford White by Benjamin Moore. “It is unique and so different from the usual drywall finish,” designer Patti Wilson says. “It helps to give the space warmth, texture and some visual interest without distracting from the rest of the beautiful finishes.” Other special features. Reclaimed-wood harvest table. Custom draperies. White oak flooring. Antique brass wall sconces. Black Shaker-style dining chairs. Antique hutch. Designer tip. “The decision to keep the fireplace helped to ground the space and make it multifunctional,” Wilson says. “The kids love to sit in the dining room by the fire before school, and it’s the favorite spot for the adults to enjoy their morning coffee or a glass of wine on the weekends.” “Uh-oh” moment. “This space was originally the family room, and the homeowners removed the original dining space to expand the kitchen area, which left...
Blues used in kitchens either cabinets or island
The island’s framework had to be strong enough to support the counter and the cooktop, and it also needed to hide the gas line. To do this, the team routed out a groove inside a leg for the pipe to run down and concealed it with a walnut cover strip. The pipe then meets up with the valve below. Along the bottom of the island is a sturdy walnut shelf where the owners can put their larger pans, bowls and other items. Wall paint: Wevet, Farrow & Ball
The black marble on the island is offset by a white Carrara marble countertop along the wall. “The owners were keen to have a distinctive pattern, so we went for one with a strong gray vein running through it,” Everett says. “Marble is a beautiful work surface, but it’s essential to properly seal and finish it to provide the best protection possible.” The double undermount sink by Franke continues the minimal, unfussy look the owners were after. The faucet dispenses hot water, again to minimize clutter by avoiding the need for a kettle.
A long walnut shelf is the perfect spot for displaying plants, artwork and utensils. An LED strip light runs along the bottom. “It bounces light around and gives a lovely warm glow in the evening,” Everett says. The limed-oak herringbone flooring was already in place, and it was sealed and protected. “It sets the whole space off and, together with the walnut, gives a warm, earthy feel to the kitchen.”
Hamper and Basket Storage Alan Clark Architects flanked the machines in this Atlanta laundry room with storage spaces. A rolling hamper can sort and neatly store dirty clothing on one side. On the other there are laundry baskets to help organize folded clean clothes. The modern farmhouse-style barn lights overhead provide nice lighting for folding the clothes on the concrete counter. Like the layout-hate the yellow!!!
Uh-oh” moment. “The thing we struggled with the most apart from the sizing and placement of the islands was where to place the main kitchen sink,” Aloisio says. “We even went to the extent of roughing it into a few locations so we had some options open when we ended up building the custom cabinets. What this came down to was functionality, and what ended up winning out was being able to stand at the sink and see the amazing view, landscaping and natural light coming in from the massive slide patio doors.” Cabinet hardware: Freestone in polished nickel, Emtek
Other special features. “The concept of the three islands was inspired by looking through Houzz at some amazing projects,” Aloisio says. “However, this situation was very different in regards to the size of the space and how to implement them in a practical, usable way and not just for show. We played with the dimensioning of the islands a lot before we landed on each island size, the spacing between them and how each would be utilized for cooking, eating and entertaining.” Other features include a wall of triple-pane glass sliding doors, and quartz countertops and a backsplash that look like Calacatta Gold marble. Designer secret. “A thing of note which is not in the photographs is a hidden walk-in pantry,” Aloisio says. “We make it look like paneled cabinetry, but when opened it’s basically a door into a large walk-in pantry. Such a nice surprise for the unsuspecting.”
Designer: Curtis Aloisio of Muretto Custom Homes Location: Calgary, Alberta, Canada Size: 448 square feet (42 square meters), including breakfast island and nook; 16 by 28 feet Homeowners’ request. A classic, sophisticated and elegant kitchen with modern flair. Cabinet paint color. Wimborne White by Farrow & Ball. “We have done cream colors in many homes recently due to their popularity, and we love them,” designer Curtis Aloisio says. “This particular color we have found to be the perfect blend of white and cream, without having any strong undertones of yellow. Although not very noticeable in the photos, the islands are actually a few shades darker than the main perimeter color of cream. This was a match to a Cloverdale Paint color called Harrow Gate, something that is used periodically through the home and we felt would tie the kitchen in with the rest of the home, also adding some additional interest and depth to the kitchen.”
Homeowners’ request. A white coastal kitchen that wouldn’t feel too cold and sterile. Cabinet paint color. Alabaster by Sherwin-Williams. “It’s my favorite warm white for cabinets,” says designer Chelsey Becker, who used Houzz photos with her clients to help her understand their vision.

Like blue cabinet-it is unexpected! Setting up the kitchen right was important to the flow of the condo. The layout maintains a clear hallway space from the front of the apartment to the family room in the back, and the storage is hardworking. The blue block of cabinets includes a panel-front refrigerator and a tall pullout pantry cabinet. Dipped-in-paint stool legs play off the blue cabinets. The lower corner cabinet is outfitted with a Hafele half-moon storage accessory (a wire lazy Susan-like shelving unit that can be pulled out of the cabinet for easy access). The island contains a sink, dishwasher and pullout cabinet for trash.
Trend No. 8: Specific Splurges What the pros say. TV areas and kids’ play areas are the most common finished basement project requests Sebring says he gets, but homeowners willing to invest more into their basements continue to use the extra space for fun features like wine cellars, saunas and party rooms. “Higher-end basements are spaces that you don’t have upstairs,” he says. “Around here it’s a space where, when it’s cold, you can go down and have a really fun atmosphere.”

Basement ideas-Really like this 4. Frame a TV It’s not always easy to make a TV look elegant and attractive, but that’s what Finch London did with these built-ins. Simple white wall-hung cabinets and shelves form a symmetrical frame around the sleek black screen. To ensure that the cabinetry looks anchored to the white space, the team topped the base cabinet with a 1½-inch layer of American black walnut.
