Design a nookCreate a cosy desk area by constructing cupboards either side of your desk. Here, a window forms the central area where the desk is located, while cabinets either side turn it into a snug workspace.Drawers and cupboards are ideal for stowing everything out of the way, while handy shelves are positioned within easy reach of the desk.
Tailor shelves to fitBefore you install shelves along your desk wall, take some time to work out what you want to store. Sort through your items, recycling anything you don’t need and relocating things that aren’t used in the office. Once you’ve done this, you should have an organised collection of items that need allocated storage. Now you can work out how much shelving you need for each group of items, and the amount of room you require above each shelf. The shelving unit here has been devised to fit all the owner’s items perfectly, so there’s no wasted space.
Hide awayIf you have a lot of office items to store, you might find it easier to keep them concealed in a cabinet. Make the most of any wall space by fitting a line of cupboards in which you can organise all your work paraphernalia while keeping the rest of the space clutter-free.The designers of this home office have built the cabinets right up to the ceiling and along the sloped surface. If bespoke joinery isn’t in your budget, consider adapting freestanding wardrobes or kitchen units instead.
Find a treasure Some furniture is so special, it decorates a room almost like a piece of art. This set of apothecary drawers probably isn’t the most useful – unless you have lots of tiny items, such as sewing supplies, to store – but it adds delicious depth and charm to the neutral living space. Also, its shallow shape makes it much easier to accommodate than a larger piece.
Beautify your bathroomFor a stunning statement bathroom, consider commissioning a bespoke vanity unit. This handsome creation houses the toilet cistern and provides storage drawers and shelving. The overall impression is of an antique as opposed to a new addition, making it appear at home in a period property. However, this slick style would also work well for homes with a midcentury-modern vibe.Find a carpenter or joiner in your local area.

Pull out your shoesIf you’ve run out of wall space in your bedroom, think about how to utilise the rest of the area instead. Here, the whole of the back wall has been turned into storage, with deep cupboards. This has allowed a narrow, yet deep pull-out shelving unit to be included, which has plenty of room for shoes.

Shut it downA desk in a cupboard provides the ideal spot to keep devices out of sight. Add in shelves and boxes to store techy essentials, then shut the doors to hide everything away.Browse storage box designs in the Houzz ShopTell us…How do you keep tech tidy in your home? A place for everything behind closed doorsThe fun of this kitchen photo is imagining just how soothing it would be to close those cupboard doors once you’d finished cooking. You’d be able to return the space to an uninterrupted run of crisp, painted units with absolutely no hint of the culinary clutter that may or may not be hiding within. But the beauty of this cupboard is the attention to detail: the microwave has been neatly slotted in at perfect access height for ease of use, and food storage has been squeezed in all around it. With tall shelves either side for bottles, a low shelf above for small jars and packets, and two satisfying rows of wine bottle storage either side of a central run of drawers, this cabinet is a mini work of art.
Perfectly tailored shelvesThe owner of this larder cupboard must walk around in a state of bliss, because this is one beautifully organised food storage system. Every inch has been utilised, with storage baskets for loose items, shelves for tins and packets, and door racks for small bottles and spices. Even the labels match up and face straight forwards. There’s no mixing of crockery and food stuffs in this kitchen, either. Generous cupboards to the left house stacks of neat white crockery, while drawers below are just waiting for rows of gleaming silverware to be neatly lined up, leaving the pantry cupboard free for all those beautiful food packets, tins and jars. Bliss.

Create a cupboard from scratchIf you’re planning a new home or redesigning significantly, try to leave space for a dedicated closet, preferably located off a landing or bedroom corridor.Shelves just 45cm deep would be ideal, again spaced with 25cm clear between each. If you’d like a walk-in closet, allow a minimum of 70cm in front of the shelves for passage. Otherwise, tall doors, reaching from floor to ceiling, will allow good access to the whole space. Make sure everything has a home, with rarely used or out-of-season items on the uppermost shelves.
The oversized dressing tableHow much jewellery or make-up do you actually use each day? Chances are you rotate through a fairly small number of items at any one time, so why the need for a huge dressing table to store all that stuff that only comes out on high days and holidays? Keep special-occasion items in a separate box under the bed and store everyday items in a streamlined dressing table like this one…
