Don't smoke in your house then try and cover up the smell- I once went through a house smelling like smoke and incense and it made the experience very unpleasant.

Julia suggested culling as people snoop. Another great reason to cull everything you don't use is because when your house does sell, moving will be so much simpler and orderly without all the clutter that weighs you down.

Get your stovetop and oven professionally cleaned. You will be astonished how much better a professional does it. Cost not prohibitive it it will really look brand new. If you have pets get your heating ducts cleaned out - and get a friend to come and tell you if your house has pet odours. Take down light fittings and wash, and install brighter globes. Be careful not to have too many candles burning, they can smell quite cloying - better to have the house well aired and smelling fresh
