Findings from a survey of 473 AU homeowners on Houzz about their recent or planned kitchen renovation projects.

Sustainability is shaping kitchens: The vast majority of homeowners incorporate sustainable features during a kitchen renovation (95%). Popular choices include LED bulbs (71%), energy-efficient appliances (63%) and water-efficient fixtures (49%). Also, more than 2 in 5 homeowners opt for a timeless design as a sustainable choice during renovations (45%). While the most frequently cited reason for incorporating sustainable options is “long-run cost-effectiveness” (75%), making choices that are environmentally friendly is also top of mind for three in five renovating homeowners (60%).
Contemporary leads the way: Contemporary is the top style choice for renovated kitchens in 2023 (24%), followed closely by Modern (23%) and at some distance by Hamptons, Coastal and Country (11%, 7% and 4%, respectively).Popular pantries: When it comes to built-in features, 53% of kitchen updaters are installing pantry cabinets and 27% make space for a walk-in pantry.Classic colours: For walls, cabinets, benchtops and splashbacks, white is the most popular colour (62%, 52%, 39% and 38%, respectively). That said, black, green and grey bring visual interest to the space through contrasting kitchen cabinet colours (8%, 6% and 6%, respectively).Electronic upgrades: Renovating homeowners updating their appliances as part of their kitchen renovation, incorporate technology into their kitchen appliances with Wi-Fi connectivity, smartphone/tablet controls, and colour touchscreen displays (13%, 13% and 12%, respectively).Kitchen usage is varied: While the majority of homeowners (97%) use the kitchen for cooking, they also bake (58%), eat (54%), entertain (48%) and socialise (39%) there. One in 10 homeowners (16%) also work from their kitchen. One in three homeowners report that their lifestyle is healthier post-renovation (39%).
