Thanks macy.

the west end of the block will be decking and the back yard with veggie garden and fruit trees.

the skillion roof is one angle facing the north to maximise the northerly sun. We were only planning on having 1m eaves as we are doing SIPs and then maybe some type of pergola over deck.

The pergola is a good idea, perhaps with deciduous vines or you could put shadecloth over it in summer.

Great article, though its hard to do justice to the whole of Australia with its different climate zones in one place! I would love to see more articles on passive design specifically for the tropics. I live in Darwin and the number of builders who don't take the climate into account when designing or even positioning a house on a site is astounding. I can count the number of builders that do on one hand. I simply can't understand this.
