A Sydney Kitchen That Caters to a Couple's Love of Entertaining
Plenty of room for friends and family to sit and plenty of bench space for food prep were key to this Sydney kitchen
In a Q&A format, we talk to the designers – and examine the creative thinking – behind some of Houzz’s most loveable rooms.
Brief
The owners are big entertainers and love having family and friends over. They needed space for people to sit and plenty of bench space for preparation.
The client was open to fully utilising the whole room and specifically requested three fridges: one for groceries and two full-height wine/bar fridges.

The kitchen before works.
The previous kitchen was a fraction of the size. It was squished in where the laundry now is and was very impractical and tight on space.

What challenges did you work around?
The home is in Mosman on a narrow block and is split over various levels. This kitchen is positioned on the bottom level and leads out to the garden.
It was originally designed in the far-back area of the space and had been positioned in front of sandstone rock that wasn’t visible from the first inspection. The initial design concepts had therefore not factored in these constraints, so it wasn’t until further inspections and after we removed some cabinets that it was uncovered.

The initial design concepts had therefore not factored in these constraints, so it wasn’t until further inspections and after we removed some cabinets that it was uncovered.
The design therefore quickly evolved and we needed to excavate some rock. Appliances had to be reconsidered due to the change of layout and constraints, however the result works beautifully and is so functional for the client’s needs. They are thrilled.
Why do you think this room works?
The design evolved well and there are many elements that became so special and unique. Our stonemason did an incredible job of lining up the vein of the island bench with the waterfall end, which greets you when you first enter the kitchen.

The overhead cabinetry above the sink beautifully displays glassware and spirit bottles during entertaining. The way the doors on these timber upper cabinets open allows them to stay open without being in the way.
The pivot door to the laundry area creates a flush wall when closed and provides privacy and reduces noise when the machines are being used. However, when open, it allows a smooth transition to this additional area.
