I agree with you; it is such a shame to block the daylight. We've opted for venetian blinds, because they can be slanted if you need to block out very strong sunlight, opened up or closed completely; they were also by far the cheapest solution, and easy-ish to wipe clean. We have outside shutters, as everyone does here, plus rails for heavy curtains in the winter, if it gets very sharp (we live in the French Alps, so it can get chilly).

We got a local blacksmith to make a curved pole. Made the brackets and rings at a very reasonable cost and I live in an urban area!

We used the JL and Dunelm bay window pole and fixtures sets in our bays - not much difference between the two but JL better finish and Dunelm one the rings come loose and detached from the curtains - a lot
