The 10 Most Popular Bathroom Photos of 2016
Our readers’ favorite bathrooms from the past year offer ideas for lighting, storage, flooring and more
When it comes to the most popular bathrooms of 2016, there are plenty of trends to talk about. Ideas such as tankless toilets, LED shower heads and faux wood-tiled floors abound for everything from a small bathroom refresh to a total renovation. Here, in reverse order, are the 10 most popular bathrooms, as measured by the number of people who have saved photos of them to their Houzz ideabooks in 2016. Tell us in the Comments which space most appeals to you.
10. Pendant power. Designer pendant lights have been showing up over kitchen islands and dining tables for some time now, therefore, adding them to a bathroom seems like a logical extension of the look. This Los Angeles bathroom designed by Jamie Bush & Co features a custom pendant dripping with seven oversized exposed lightbulbs.
9. Integrated lighting. The designer of this modern home in Germany integrated lights into the vanity mirror. The streamlined look forgoes pendant lights from above or sconces to the side of the mirror. It also provides effective lighting at face level, which is ideal for plucking eyebrows, shaving and other grooming routines that benefit from good lighting.
8. Oversize sink. If you’re not a fan of water splashing from the sink onto the countertop or floor, you may want to consider a larger basin. In this stylish Boston bathroom, designer Kristina Crestin selected a 4-foot-wide Brockway sink from Kohler.
7. Streamlined storage. A floating double vanity and a pair of frameless mirrors keep this bathroom in Grand Rapids, Michigan, sleek and streamlined. A floor-to-ceiling cabinet in the corner provides ample storage without taking away from the clean aesthetic.
6. Fireplace wall. The team at Allard & Roberts Interior Design selected an undulating 1-by-1-foot wall tile called Ambra from Artistic Tile to create a feature fireplace wall. A gas-insert fireplace and a custom ledge are perfect for holding wineglasses, making this tub an ideal place to unwind after a long day.
5. Moody accent wall. Interior designer Yanic Simard writes in his article on energizing your bathroom: “If your bathroom has a large amount of wall space eaten up by tile, windows or mirrors, try a dark color on the remaining plain walls. This helps the more interesting features to advance and the plain walls to recede, for a more dynamic look and lots of rich character.”
4. Faux wood flooring. Wanting the look of wood floors in the bathroom without the risk of water damage has led many to embrace faux wood floors. For this bathroom, designer Martha O’Hara selected a 30-by-30-inch porcelain tile called Mansion Court from Akdo.
3. Tankless toilet. While it will cost you more money, if you really want streamlined style, it’s hard to beat tankless toilets. This master bathroom in Germany also features a walk-in shower, floating shelves, and a floor and walls covered in Norwegian quartzite.
2. Light show. This striking master bath in Kent, England, was created by the team at AV Architects. While a mixture of moody stone tile selections are definite standouts, it’s the LED shower head from Bossini that steals the show.
1. Stepped-up style. In a long, narrow bathroom like this one in London, adding furniture instead of built-in cabinets is a great way to gain storage. Not only is this leaning bookshelf more affordable than built-in cabinets, but it also creates a homey, relaxed vibe.
