Collecting wine became an interest for our clients and the more they gathered wines they liked, the more storage became an issue. These South Shore of Boston customers approached Renovisions, inc. to build a wine cellar in a section of the basement in their 1890 colonial and Cathy and Ed were up for the challenge. Environmental factors of their space, what was required by proper wine storage, including maintaining the temperature and humidity level was all taken into consideration when putting together a design which would ensure the wines integrity over the years. A detailed plan was discussed with the homeowners and their style “must-haves” and budgetary considerations were incorporated into final plans to build a 1500 bottle capacity wine cellar. The customers wanted a more rustic, casual elegance which would boast a beautiful large fieldstone hallway and a custom arched top mahogany multi light exterior door for full insulated value. Having the beams exposed was an important design element for our clients, so it required the use of R-7/inch spray foam insulation with rustic barn boards covering it and then stained to match. Mahogany wine racks were assembled over hand-scraped teak wood flooring. The basement window was replaced with a new energy efficient window and a custom ordered stained glass of a mermaid design was installed over the new window as an overlay from the adverse effects of sunlight on the wine. Rustic lighting was chosen to reflect the old world charm we sought out to create.

The space provides corner window seats for a morning cup of tea, classic leather chairs to read a book in the afternoon and a warm velvet chaise for warming up by the fire with a glass of wine in the evening. Aesthetically, the room is draped with luxurious fabrics on the windows, window seat and upholstered furniture balancing the hardscape of the exquisite stone fireplace. The suede walls envelope the room. A punch of red and lime green compliment the earthy brown tones. The result, a warm, welcoming first impression for your thoroughbred home.

What should I include in my wine cellar?

This depends on the size of your collection – or how big you hope it becomes. If you enjoy quaffing, you may want to invest in a walk-in cooler with wall-mounted wine racks and several tall wine fridges, as well as a tasting area with bar stools. If you’re a beginner or have a small collection, an eclectic home bar with mini fridge and wine rack will suffice. Essential bar accessories include wine glasses, corkscrews, carafes and aerators.

How should I store my wine?

Temperature control is at the core of a functional wine cellar. Your bottles need to be kept out of direct sunlight, and away from the heat and steam of kitchen appliances. A room that is too warm will make your wine age faster, oxidise and lose its character and flavour. If bottles are corked, they also need to be laid down. Your architect or designer will be able to help you create the ideal conditions for your home collection.

Where should I position my wine cooler?

The most important thing to consider is ease of access, which is why kitchens are the most common place to position wine coolers. Should you have minimal floor space, a small one could even sit comfortably on your countertop. If quaffing requires an occasion or you frequently host dinner parties, consider your dining room, so you can top up people’s glasses without having to leave the room. You could also make your bar fridge or cooler a destination within your entertainment or games room. There’s no denying that Aussies love to entertain and enjoy a glass or two outdoors, so if you’re lucky enough to have a covered outdoor area, this could be just the place for a cooler, too. Just ensure it doesn’t experience any extreme weather or long periods of direct sunlight.
