This was a traditional brick fireplace with a raised hearth and mantel shelf. We removed the raised hearth and then used slate hearth stones on the extension. We covered the rest of the brick surround with slate ledger stone. Then installed a new custom mantel, painted the firebox black, and installed gas logs
