This project was completed in conjunction with the construction of the home. The home’s architect was looking for someone who could design and build a new driveway, front entrance, walkways, patio, fencing, and plantings. The gardens were designed for the homeowner who had a real appreciation for gardening and was looking for variety and colour. The plants are all perennials that are relatively low maintenance while offering a wide variety of colours, heights, shapes and textures. For the hardscape, we used a Mondrian slab interlock for the main features and added a natural stone border for architectural detail.

The new steps are placed further from the tree to prevent root encroachment and serves to draw the eye to the front door. The Sydney Peak stone wall ties into the steps and reappears as the risers.

Contemporary Landscape Design for a Narrow Back Yard in Napa, CA

Dig Your Garden Landscape Design

Napa, CA residence, adjacent to a steep rock hillside. My design solutions included a contemporary redwood horizontal fence to help screen the view of the hillside along with arbors for vines that help to break up the long narrow space. I designed a triangular-shaped pergola with decorative panels from "Parasoleil" that serves as an artful focal point while providing interesting shade patterns that casts its delightful shadow along fence and patio and bench below, changing its position as the sun moves throughout the day. The landscape design includes angular planting beds, concrete pavers surrounded by gravel and a small lower-water lawn for the family to enjoy. Участок расположен на высоком берегу реки Нара, хотя река с территории участка не видна. Участок был приобретен Заказчиком два года назад. Из ландшафтных работ предыдущим собственником были высажены вдоль забора березы с плотностью через 1 метр. На этом улучшение участка было закончено. Участок вытянутый, на участке есть рельеф - понижение в сторону реки. Рельеф не равномерный, в середине участка есть место со значительным перепадом высот, затем участок имеет не большой уклон. Пожелание Заказчика - максимально сохранить березы вдоль границ участка не позволяло нам проводить значительные работы по изменению рельефа, так как уровень корневых шеек уже растущих берез диктовал уровень поверхности почвы. Заказчик хотел в течение одного сезона получить полностью готовый участок. Что мы смогли выполнить. Перед домом расположен сухой ручей и сад трав. Цветник - справа от дорожки из клинкерной брусчатки. The pool was updated and the Corten steel arbor cleverly cantilevered on this 5 acre property. Using a crib wall system (Slope Block) allowed us to create lush terraces from toe to top - garden pathways lined with boulders create the illusion they were always there. The Slope Block was acid stained and planted so they eye can see just a hint of the bones through the lush California and Australian native plants and trees.

The clients courtyard was designed to work around the majestic live oak tree and its massive canopy. The fence is edged with Alphonse Karr Bamboo, and the elliptical bed at the foot of the tree showcase a mass planting of wood ferns. The courtyard houses an elongated ipe deck with floating wood and metal stairs. The ipe skirting offers an untraditional, but dynamic and distinct look.

How to Create a Garden for Your Home

All these are actually quite hardy plants, so once established, your tropical garden is actually quite easy to maintain. Use this structure and apply it to your style. Research which plants you need to set your base for a garden and go from there.

Add some decor

If the plants don’t quite do it for you yet, or if you want to add some extra wow-factor, consider adding some extra features. Even if you can’t accommodate a swimming pool, hot tub or pond, you could look at smaller water features. Simple rocks can also have a great effect, while statues and gnomes will add some extra character. Don’t forget to add some furniture so you have a nice place to sit and enjoy your garden!
