The rear of this Beckenham house was extensively remodelled to create a stunning new kitchen with a balcony overlooking the garden, and with a basement room that doubles up as a spa and play area. The basement was built with bi-folding glass doors that open all the way across the large room, and which meant that the space flowed beautifully outside into a lower level terrace. This was designated as the main relaxing space and our design incorporates a sunken hot tub and a fire place, with outdoor lighting and speakers. The palette of greys reflected the colours selected for the house interior. For the upper terrace level we designed an outdoor kitchen incorporating a built-in bbq and sink, with space for a large dining table and sun loungers.

Tiered Walls for Sloping Yard

Tiered walls made of natural moss rock stone to eliminate small, but difficult to maintain, slope in the front yard. Wall was set on a poured footing, built with cinder block, and faced with moss rock. Plantiings were chosen to blend with the existing landscape and handle sun/shade conditions. Area was converted to drip irrigation for the walls to better control volume of water to the planted areas vs. the sodded front yard area.

This is an urban single family home situated on a narrow lot that is about 1/8 of an acre and is only 2 blocks from the Pacific Ocean. I designed a completely new garden and installed everything along with the client’s help. The garden I designed consisted of an ornamental grass garden, a xeriscape garden with decomposed granite mounds, fruit trees and shrubs located throughout, a jungle forest garden, and raised brick vegetable beds in the rear. Previously, there was a wood deck covering almost the entire property that was removed by the owner. We installed root guard around all of the walkways. I installed the raised brick vegetable beds and walkways around the vegetable beds. Many of the plants were chosen to provide food and habitat for pollinators as well. The greenery you choose is critical to your look. For example, if you’re trying to create a tropical garden palm trees and bamboo are your go-to options. Other popular options are golden cane palm trees and fern for ground cover. From there you can add some colour with bright flowers like frangipani, hibiscus or bromeliads. All these are actually quite hardy plants, so once established, your tropical garden is actually quite easy to maintain. Use this structure and apply it to your style. Research which plants you need to set your base for a garden and go from there.

Add some decor

If the plants don’t quite do it for you yet, or if you want to add some extra wow-factor, consider adding some extra features. Even if you can’t accommodate a swimming pool, hot tub or pond, you could look at smaller water features. Simple rocks can also have a great effect, while statues and gnomes will add some extra character. Don’t forget to add some furniture so you have a nice place to sit and enjoy your garden!
