This gorgeous family home located in southern Sydney has been transformed over the course of 12 months. Our clients were a young family who had recently moved into the home and were faced with an abundance of space to fill. They had a good idea of the looks they liked, but felt unsure about where to buy furniture and homewares and how to pull the whole look together. Together we agreed that their style was a hybrid of Scandi meets luxes meets family friendly. The first area we worked on was the formal living space. The room had very generous proportions and great natural light. Although technically a formal space, with two small children the room still needed to be family friendly. Matching charcoal grey sofas are a comfy choice and the durable fabric choice easily hides wear and tear. When it came to cushions, texture was the name of the game. Leather, linen and velvet all feature heavily, with a soft palette of pale pink, grey, navy, neutrals and tan. It’s the little finishing touches that make this room extra special. We chose concrete and marble accessories with small doses of black and timber to keep the look fresh and modern. Next on our list was the master bedroom. And it was here that we really upped the luxury factor. Our clients really wanted this space to feel like an adults-only escape. We kept much of the colour palette from the downstairs area – navy, pale pink and grey – but we also added in crisp white and soft oatmeal tones to soften the look. We ditched the Scandi vibes and introduced luxury embellishments like glass lamp bases and tufting in the bedhead and footstool. The result was the perfect blend of relaxation and glamour. The final area to receive our magic touch was the dining room and kitchen. Many of the larger pieces were already in place, but the rooms needed dressing to bring them to life. Minty greens, cool greys and soft pinks work back perfectly with a blonde timber dining table a fresh white kitchen. Overall, each area of the home has it’s own distinct look, yet there are enough common elements in place to creative a cohesive design scheme. The home owners wanted to create a place for a wide screen TV, concealed; as well as a place for their extensive book collection. We achieved this with custom cabinets, surround sound and new furniture, window treatments, carpet & area rug. A pair of custom framed panels display an original metal sculpture, that slides open to reveal the TV. The fireplace was surfaced with a large slab of marble to compliment the contemporary design. Recessed halogen lighting was installed in the ceiling in the living room area. The adjacent dining area also received new furniture, lighting and built-in cabinets for storage. The wall between the 2 rooms was perfect for the vinette created. New shear blinds were installed on the windows and sliding doors.

Extendable dining table The client specified a high gloss Art Deco style table that could be extendable, using Macassar ebony timber. They had mentioned that they didn't like the idea of the commonly used art deco style base frames, which are a 'U' shaped form sat on a plinth. This table was to be space saving, so a folding top worked well within the designated area this table was to be situated. I used the Art Deco fan style to construct the legs, each section a different thickness to add texture and to form shadows, making the legs interesting to look at. To break up the mass of the dark timber I used a stainless steel inlay to follow all profiles of the design. The idea of using stainless steel was to catch the light and also add a more elegant vista to the table in keeping with the period style. The inlays border the top when open and are also on the top when the table leaves are in the stowed position. There is a dovetailed drawer hidden in the top rails for keeping items in, thus de cluttering the top and overall design. Certainly a statement piece of furniture you can never tire to look at from all angles.

Kitchen/Dining Combo Design Ideas with Carpet

A dining room can be used for casual dining, integrated into an open plan and connected to the living and kitchen areas; or as a formal space reserved solely for entertaining. While it may not be used frequently, it is a great focal point in the home, and requires little furnishings. Here's what you need to consider before you start planning a new dining room...

How will you use your dining room?

First, consider how frequently you will use the space. If you plan on using your dining room on a daily basis, a casual dining set-up with sturdy, long-lasting furniture is best. As for where you position it – well, any unused space in the home can be converted into a casual dining space, whether it be at the end of a kitchen island, or at the bottom of the stairs. A formal dining room, on the other hand, is more suited to a dedicated space, which is more common in heritage homes where space originally wasn’t at a premium. Perhaps you want your dining room to multi-task and accommodate everyday meals, homework sessions and grown-up dinner parties… If that’s the case, furniture is key. Look for versatile dining tables in either Australian or New Zealand hardwood or weathered timber for a more rustic look. These won’t show up sticky fingerprints as much and can be dressed up for guests.

What size and shape should your dining table be?

Your dining table should be able to seat all family members with some room for additional guests – each person should have at least 60 centimetres of space at the table. The right size, however, also depends on how much room you have. A general rule of thumb is to leave no less than 1 metre from the dining table to the wall or any additional furniture, so people have enough room to comfortably move around the space. Rectangular dining tables are versatile and can work in a variety of settings, while oval dining tables are more traditional and can turn any meal into an occasion. If you have a tight space to work in, a round dining table is best, and also a great option if you want to encourage conversation. A square dining table can be a dramatic addition to a dining room, but only if you have the space. It allows everyone at the table to see each other, but the bigger the table, the harder it will be able to hold a conversation with someone at the other end.

What type of dining chairs should you choose?

Once you’ve decided on a dining table, look for dining chairs that share a common design element. If your dining table legs are curved, for example, try to match them with dining chairs that have a similar curve, either in the legs or back. Next, consider the dimensions of the chair. The height of your dining chairs should allow at least 30 centimetres between the top of the seat and the top of the table. And to keep your tush happy, avoid dining chairs narrower than 45 centimetres.

How can you decorate your dining room?

Dining rooms are relatively minimal spaces, but that makes them a great place to splash a little colour through artwork, especially if yours is a formal dining room. If your dining room is lacking warmth, consider painting the walls a deep shade of red or blue, or go contemporary with black or grey. A cosy rug will make the space feel more intimate, while a sideboard or cabinet of curiosities will further personalise the space. Often overlooked, dining room lighting can also drastically alter the mood of a room, creating drama, spurring romance or encouraging conversation. Opt for soft lighting in the dining area with dimmer switches, and choose oversized pendants in large, open spaces or to make the dining area more of a focal point. Finally, add some table settings, such as a lace tablecloth for a whimsy feel, or a more basic table runner for a chic look.
