Oasis Under the Eaves: Attic Master Suite

Photo: Michael K. Wilkinson The large shower has fittings on opposite ends. It has marble walls and floors. Since marble is traditional material, our designer included horizontal bands of thin chrome trim to add a modern touch. Another modern touch? Ice blue glass tile accent. The long drain is modern, and is located to one side so it’s not underfoot. The reason for the open plan was to maintain natural light throughout the attic. However, the bathroom was a challenge because it has privacy walls. Our designer opted to use continuous clerestory glass panels that wrap around the corner of the bathroom enclosure. These custom glass pieces allow light to flow from the dormers and skylight into the bathroom.

A teen’s bathroom that the family won’t grow out of. A custom vanity and matching mirror made in collaboration with a local craftsperson are complimented with a glass mosaic tile, inspired by kelp forests. Delicate ceramic lights reminiscent of folded paper illuminate the mirror. A small soaking tub by the window for relaxing and reflecting, while enjoying the views of nature. The window casings and baseboards were designed with Bardiglio Marble, also used on the shower and vanity.

Except for the ceiling, we custom designed a glass mosaic hybrid from glossy glass tiles, ocean style bottle glass tiles, and mirrored tiles. This client had dreams of a Caribbean escape in their very own en suite, and we made their dreams come true! The top of the walls start with the deep blues of the ocean and then flow into teals and turquoises, light blues, and finally into the sandy colored floor. Firstly, consider your space. Is it rectangular or are you working with a long, narrow room? This will determine how many wet walls you can accommodate, and if a bathtub can fit. For example, in a narrow room a freestanding bathtub may not work, and a one-wall layout that lines up shower, toilet and vanity on the same wall will make sense in most cases. (It’s also the most budget-friendly option in terms of plumbing). Maybe separate rooms for toilet and shower make sense? Maybe you want to work with a window above a bathtub or in the shower. You may live in an old house where you can keep some of the original character of the home, or you may be working with a small apartment space. 2 Consider How You Use Your Bathroom

Once you’ve gathered some inspiration, have a think about who is using the room, and how they will be using it. A single guy needs a lot less storage than a teenage girl, and a family bathroom may need to consider elderly family members. You may also want to accommodate a washer and dryer in the bathroom, since it’s where clothes are taken off frequently. Also consider safety and cleaning. Ensure no-one will slip and hurt themselves, and consider that many little tiles will make for many little nooks for grime to accumulate, whereas big surfaces like a sink that is integrated with the vanity counter, or a big mirror will make wiping down the surface much easier than having sinks sitting on top or an intricately designed mirror.
