The theme of choice for this nursery was obvious for California born twin boys, Caspar and Fritz (1) . The star spangled American flag set the navy, white and red colour scheme whilst a mixture of white and natural wood helped to balance out the scheme and add warmth. Soft, fluffy rugs and cushions combined with easy access books make for a fun play corner.

BABY BOY NURSERY // HE’S ONE HAPPY CAMPER When we found out our second child is a boy, it took me a minute to get going on his nursery plans. For those who know me, this is very unusual. Why? Because I one-hundred-and-ten-percent thought I was having a girl. (I still can’t believe I have a boy!) I know, I know, statistically there’s a fifty-fifty percent chance; but I had NO DOUBT in my mind this baby was going to be a girl. I mean, I had 3 Pinterest boards created with different girl themes, and NONE for a boy! So, once I wrapped my head around the gender of our new family member, I just needed to find my piece of passion: the design inspiration that would set the wheels in motion… I was looking for a print, a color, a piece of art or something to inspire the rest of the room. For me, it’s usually fabric or a rug, and in this case it was the former. And I should’ve known, the Land of Nod did it again! When I came across their “Nature Trail” bedding collection, I was a smitten kitten. Heart-shaped pupils and all. This is a perfect theme for our new little man’s room because our family (on my husband’s dad’s side) goes camping for a week at the end of July e v e r y . s i n g l e . y e a r . for over the last 50 years. It’s kind of a big deal and this bedding couldn’t be more spot-on. Moving our daughter to a different bedroom and reusing her old nursery as his new nursery should have been an easy switch. But (ask my husband), I make nothing easy. Regardless of how we got there and how long it took – we got it done before baby arrived and I think it turned out adorable (ah hem, if I don’t say so myself). It certainly takes the sting out of rocking a screaming newborn back to sleep at 3 am, that’s for sure.

Space planning was essential in the nursery with the room being so compact. Originally the crib was over by the arch window, but the clients have such great natural light flowing in, we didn't want to interrupt that. Installing a custom bench by the adjacent window added extra sitting space for the family.

Nursery: A 'Take Flight' Inspired Room

This flight inspired nursery was designed for a family with a passion for travel. A beloved antique travel poster and existing crib were the starting points for our design. We worked with artists on etsy.com to develop some unique custom elements for the room. Our favorite is a vintage inspired plane propeller that was crafted as a childhood growth chart. In house, we crafted a paper airplane mobile from city street map inspired paper and a reclaimed bike rim. Tailored blackout lined drapes were added to soften the room and provide a light-free space for baby to rest. The patterned rug is a fun addition that has become the family’s favorite baby photo op spot! I designed a nursery for first time parents expecting a baby boy. The room had an existing painted brick wall which became my inspiration. I kept the pallette neutral with soft greys, washed woods, linens and added some hints of pale blue. The soft details in the furniture and curves of the chair create such a sweet spot in the room. Orange is the new black, bringing in the pop of color on the functional side of the room. While the parents change and read to the little one, I brought in Hermes orange to create a luxe sophistication to the room. The overall neutral backdrop comes to life with this accent color.

Center City is home to this lovely Philadelphia new family of three. The condominium has high ceilings and large windows – fabulous city views are available from every window in this unit. The young family who lives here needed Henck Design to come in and make some updates. We sourced furniture, rugs, and home accessories for the family’s guest room that we transformed into a nursery for their brand new baby. We sourced and selected case pieces for storage, nursery furniture, upholstered goods and all things baby friendly. The nursery space was large enough to be able to bring in a spacious chaise lounge for the mother and her new baby to nap, rest, and read in. It’s perfectly set up for him to grow, play and learn in for the future. Interior design jobs that include Nursery design are always rewarding and add a fresh quality to any home. Which Essential Elements Should a Baby Room Have?

When browsing through pictures of nurseries on Houzz, you’ll notice a common theme: They usually all include similar pieces of furniture and decor. You can’t go past a cot, changing table and a dresser. Whatever you’re after, you’ll be sure to find something for your taste, even if you’re limited by a small space or need to make it work on a budget. Another aspect to remember is practicality. You want to make sure you have enough storage so you can have a clutter (and trip-hazard!) free space, and you want to have everything within easy reach when it comes to changing nappies so you don’t risk your baby rolling off the change table while you turn around reaching for the baby wipes. Think about practical furniture: closets without doors, open shelves and furniture and walls that are easy to clean should be your go-to’s.

Decorating and Choosing the Right Colour

Choosing colours is a big one. These days, you’re not limited to blue for a baby boy or pink for a baby girl - a lot of nurseries are actually held gender-neutral and you may be decorating without knowing the gender. Unisex colours are on the rise, as well as feature walls with inspirational artwork and themes that encourage exploration. The possibilities are endless - whether you go for a travel theme with clouds, a nature environment with mountains and trees, or animals like elephants or owls to tell your little one good night, you’ll be able to find wallpapers, decals and decorations to suit. Also consider a nice, soft rug for when your baby starts crawling.

A Cosy Room can Promote Better Sleep

Being able to create nighttime-like darkness, peace and quiet at anytime of day could be something you’ll be thankful for later if your baby doesn’t want to go to sleep when it’s bright and guests are around, so think about lighting and soundproofing. A pair of heavy curtains could do the trick, and if you add a cute nightlight you can evoke an even more peaceful mood. The temperature and humidity of the room can also be major factors when it comes to sleeptime - too hot, too cold, too humid or dry? Make sure you can easily regulate the room temperature and have warm blankets handy in winter. You may also want to invest in a dehumidifier or vaporiser - these may earn extra points for white noise, too!

Planning for the Future

Keep in mind that a baby will not be a baby room for long - they grow fast! Depending on how long you keep your baby with you, you may not even have a separate room and directly jump to sharing with their sibling. Keep in mind that you may be planning for a more grown-up kids room soon, and your baby doesn’t really care about the decor of the room as much as you do. Choose items you like and go for furniture that you’ll be able to move to different rooms later if you can.
