Old fixer-uppers often require two competing levels of priorities from their new homeowners. First and foremost is the need to immediately attend to those repairs that ensure the continued functioning and general well being of the house’s structure. By nature, these usually demand “house on fire!” status, especially when compared to other types of remodeling work that simply enhances aesthetics and general comfort.
In the case of a Delaware couple, a structural issue with the front of their 125 year old Victorian (it was sinking!), along with some other more pressing challenges, put a 13 year long hold on getting the bathroom for which they had long dreamed.

By the time Dave Fox Design Build Remodelers was hired to handle the construction, the couple certainly had put plenty of thought into converting a spare second-floor bedroom into the master bath. Courtney Burnett, Fox’s Interior Design Manager on the project, credits the owners for “having great creative minds, with lots of ideas to contribute.” By the time it came to put a formal design plan into place, the client “drove the look while we devised how the space would function.”
It’s worth noting that there are drawbacks in being given too much time for advance planning. Owners’ tastes in design may change, while a steady stream of new fixtures and building products always demand consideration up to the last minute. “We had been collecting ideas for a while…pictures of what we liked, but as it turned out, when it came time to select fixtures, tile, etc., we used little from those pictures,” the owners admit.

The finished bath exudes an art deco spirit that isn’t true to the home’s Victorian origins, which Burnett attributes to being more of a reflection of the homeowners’ preferences than the actual era of the structure. Despite that incongruity, everyone feels that they have remained true to the house by selecting vintage style elements, including subway tiles for the walls, hexagonal tile for the floors, and a pedestal sink that served as the focal point for the entire room.
But as with all dreams, once one is achieved, a new one soon beckons. With the bathroom’s strikingly beautiful turquoise paint barely dry, the completion of that long-awaited project has served to kick-start plans for finishing off the remainder of the Victorian’s second floor.

M.J. Whelan Construction
A Picture is worth a thousand words, but it's difficult to describe this exquisite basement in a photograph. Designed for a couple who are a party waiting to happen, this walkout basement was destined to be spectacular. Once a cold, blank slate of concrete, the basement is now an extraordinary multi-functional living space. The luxurious new design includes a stunning full bar with all the amenities. The cabinetry was done in Brookhaven Bridgeport Oak in a Bistro finish and granite countertops. In the lounge area an older fireplace was removed and replaced with a Lennox direct-vent fireplace. Gorgeous stacked quartz stone in Glacier white surrounds the unit and Corian was used for the hearth. A home theater room is tucked away yet open to the lounge area. Custom woodwork also helps to set this basement apart. Unique art deco columns were designed by the M.J. Whelan design team, along with several art nooks peppered throughout the space. Beautiful trim molding wrap the entire space. Tray ceilings help to define different areas of the space. Lighting is layered throughout, including indirect cove lighting wrapping every tray. A spa room and full bathroom were also a part of the new design.
De Meza + Architecture
Taking the elements of the traditional 1929 bathroom as a spring board, this bathroom’s design asserts that modern interiors can live beautifully within a conventional backdrop. While paying homage to the work-a-day bathroom, the finished room successfully combines modern sophistication and whimsy. The familiar black and white tile clad bathroom was re-envisioned utilizing a custom mosaic tile, updated fixtures and fittings, an unexpected color palette, state of the art light fixtures and bold modern art. The original dressing area closets, given a face lift with new finish and hardware, were the inspiration for the new custom vanity - modern in concept, but incorporating the grid detail found in the original casework.
The Property Sisters
This vintage style bathroom was inspired by it's 1930's art deco roots. The goal was to recreate a space that felt like it was original. With lighting from Rejuvenation, tile from B&W tile and Kohler fixtures, this is a small bathroom that packs a design punch. The Galeana Group
This bathroom is situated between two bedrooms in 1920s mansion in the heart of one of San Antonio, Texas' most important historic districts. The design was created for a teenage girl (hence the subtle touches of pink), but it's historically relevant and classic design makes it appropriate for anyone. The beauty of this project is that the space looks clean and updated, but also looks like it could've been original to the house.

Transitional Design Condo Update in San Francisco, California Pacific Heights Neighborhood
The owners of this condo in Pacific Heights wanted to update their 60’s style kitchen and bathrooms yet strike a balance between ultra modern and conservative. To achieve this, we combined clean modern lines and contemporary fittings with warm natural stone and rich woods. In the kitchen, a distinctive effect is achieved by using quarter sawn cherry veneer on the shaker style cabinet doors with parallel grain run horizontally. Beautiful brown granite and custom stain compliment the oak floors we selected to provide continuity with the rest of the house. The master bath features a vanity designed with a wrap-over counter of thick granite, wenge wood veneers, Venetian plaster and a carefully coordinated variety of glass and stone tiles. In the guest bath a similar material palette is enlivened by inclusion of a wall hung toilet and an art niche.

For its September Issue, Architectural Digest was invited to discover and unveil Kate Moss’ collaboration with the prestigious English wallpaper brand de Gournay. It is in the heart of Primrose Hill, in the fashion icon’s house, that her inimitable aesthetic sense is once yet demonstrated.
Already a long-standing de Gournay client, it should come as no surprise that she chose to join forces with the brand to create ‘Anemones in Light’, a beautiful chinoiserie wallcovering now part of the house’s permanent collection and showcased in her bathroom, reflecting her personal style: sleek and modern with a poetic touch.
This Art Deco-inspired masterpiece, made in custom Xuan paper, displays largescale hand-painted Anemones, symbol of luck according to Greek mythology. The intricate flowers, alongside shards of light hand-gilded in sterling silver metal leaf, superbly stand out on an ethereal background. This backdrop is painted in a hue named “Dusk”, referring to the supermodel’s favourite time of the day and reminiscent of “a summer night when it goes silvery-blue from the light of the moon”, as she stated in Architectural Digest.
The Double Lowther vanity basin suite, handmade using traditional methods, finds its place perfectly in this glamorous, romantic and relaxing atmosphere. Our largest basin unit constitutes a wonderful option for bathrooms providing sufficient space as this one. It features a stunning classic marble white Arabescato finish, hand-cut with detailed moulding and characterized by black veins, echoing with the flowers’ long stems. This precious piece also includes his and her deep and spacious basins, made in hand-poured china for a unique result. Its stand, created here in a chrome finish, blends in beautifully with the silver-tinted wallpaper and the embroidered curtains, made from saris, which are draped at the windows.
Last but not least: the mirrored sections, which create the illusion of a bigger room, have been designed in a way to outline the pre-existing wooden panelling with elegance. Here are displayed antique perfume bottles, golden ornaments and flowers.
