Curated Nest
Formal dining room: This light-drenched dining room in suburban New Jersery was transformed into a serene and comfortable space, with both luxurious elements and livability for families. Moody grasscloth wallpaper lines the entire room above the wainscoting and two aged brass lantern pendants line up with the tall windows. We added linen drapery for softness with stylish wood cube finials to coordinate with the wood of the farmhouse table and chairs. We chose a distressed wood dining table with a soft texture to will hide blemishes over time, as this is a family-family space. We kept the space neutral in tone to both allow for vibrant tablescapes during large family gatherings, and to let the many textures create visual depth.

We made every effort to visually meld the dining room with the living rooms without applying the same wall covering. This bold blue and white geometric gives a modern twist to a room with traditional corner cabinets. The overall color scheme of blue and white can be accessorized with different contrasting colors as desired for completely different looks.

Mid Century modern meets arts and crafts - this dining room combines numerous influences for a layered, textured approach. Tyler Mallory Photography tylermallory.com

These totally hip homeowners love mid-century modern design. Since this dining area is open to the kitchen, we added the silver leaf wallcovering to bring the feeling of the stainless steel appliances into this room. We knew this room will potentially have food and drink disasters, so the Knoll chairs are covered in a very durable and chic chocolate brown metallic vinyl, and we used carpet tiles which can be easily replaced if stained. The custom walnut and chrome table expands to seat 12; we designed the custom sofa at right to be used as a split banquet in such instances. The hand-woven mohair drapery completes the room, and is a warm contrast to the silver leaf wall.

The homeowner of this ranch style home in Orange Park Acres wanted the Kitchen Breakfast Nook to become a large informal Dining Room that was an extension of the new Great Room. A new painted limestone effect on the used brick fireplace sets the tone for a lighter, more open and airy space. Using a bench for part of the seating helps to eliminate crowding and give a place for the grandkids to sit that can handle sticky hands. Custom designed dining chairs in a heavy duty velvet add to the luxurious feeling of the room and can be used in the adjacent Great Room for additional seating. A heavy dark iron chandelier was replaced with the lovely fixture that was hanging in another room; it's pale tones perfect for the new scheme. The window seat cushions were updated in a serviceable ostrich print taupe vinyl enhanced by rich cut velvet brocade and metallic woven pillows, making it a perfect place to sit and enjoy the outdoors. The dining room of this home was also updated due to the Kitchen and adjoining space remodel. Continuing the wonderful warm walnut into the Dining Room, the panels were specifically selected so the grain did not match to create interest. Hidden "windows" from the Dining Room into the Kitchen allow for ease of pass through serving. The contrast of the silver leafed cork wallcovering behind the wood countertop repeats the cool vs. warm play of tones as seen in the Kitchen. The homeowner has several different types of coffee and espresso machines. The large doors to the right of the dining room cabinet open to reveal a wet bar in which she can either make an eye-opening cup of espresso or a delicious cocktail. A refrigerator drawer and freezer drawer are also fully concealed within the rich walnut cabinetry.

New window seat adds seating and storage to the space. We added thick new moldings for architectural interest; dark hardwood floors provide additional warmth. The vintage chandelier draws color from the nearby ocean and adds a spark of color and interest.
Solid wood Parsons dining table and the Wishbone chairs provide an interesting mix of geometric shapes, styles and textures. The sisal rug grounds the area and adds another natural element. The window seat was added to create much-needed additional seating and extra storage space.

The walls of this formal dining room have all been paneled and painted a crisp white to set off the stark gray used on the upper part of the walls, above the paneling. Ceilings are coffered and a dramatic large pendant lamp is placed centered in the paneled ceiling. A silk light grey rug sits proud under a 12' wide custom dining table. Reclaimed wood planks from Canada and an industrial steel base harden the soft lines of the room and provide a bit of whimsy. Dining benches sit on one side of the table, and four leather and nail head studded chairs flank the other side. The table comfortably sits a party of 12.
