For many, extra time at home during COVID left them wanting more from their homes. Whether you realized the shortcomings of your space or simply wanted to combat boredom, a well-designed and functional home was no longer a want, it became a need. Tina found herself wanting more from her Old Irving Park home and reached out to The Kitchen Studio about adding function to her kitchen to make the most of the available real estate.
At the end of the day, there is nothing better than returning home to a bright and happy space you love. And this kitchen wasn’t that for Tina. Dark and dated, with a palette from the past and features that didn’t make the most of the available square footage, this remodel required vision and a fresh approach to the space. Lead designer, Stephanie Cole’s main design goal was better flow, while adding greater functionality with organized storage, accessible open shelving, and an overall sense of cohesion with the adjoining family room.
The original kitchen featured a large pizza oven, which was rarely used, yet its footprint limited storage space. The nearby pantry had become a catch-all, lacking the organization needed in the home. The initial plan was to keep the pizza oven, but eventually Tina realized she preferred the design possibilities that came from removing this cumbersome feature, with the goal of adding function throughout the upgraded and elevated space. Eliminating the pantry added square footage and length to the kitchen for greater function and more storage. This redesigned space reflects how she lives and uses her home, as well as her love for entertaining.
The kitchen features a classic, clean, and timeless palette. White cabinetry, with brass and bronze finishes, contrasts with rich wood flooring, and lets the large, deep blue island in Woodland’s custom color Harbor – a neutral, yet statement color – draw your eye.
The kitchen was the main priority. In addition to updating and elevating this space, Tina wanted to maximize what her home had to offer. From moving the location of the patio door and eliminating a window to removing an existing closet in the mudroom and the cluttered pantry, the kitchen footprint grew. Once the floorplan was set, it was time to bring cohesion to her home, creating connection between the kitchen and surrounding spaces.
The color palette carries into the mudroom, where we added beautiful new cabinetry, practical bench seating, and accessible hooks, perfect for guests and everyday living. The nearby bar continues the aesthetic, with stunning Carrara marble subway tile, hints of brass and bronze, and a design that further captures the vibe of the kitchen.
Every home has its unique design challenges. But with a fresh perspective and a bit of creativity, there is always a way to give the client exactly what they want [and need]. In this particular kitchen, the existing soffits and high slanted ceilings added a layer of complexity to the lighting layout and upper perimeter cabinets.
While a space needs to look good, it also needs to function well. This meant making the most of the height of the room and accounting for the varied ceiling features, while also giving Tina everything she wanted and more. Pendants and task lighting paired with an abundance of natural light amplify the bright aesthetic. The cabinetry layout and design compliments the soffits with subtle profile details that bring everything together. The tile selections add visual interest, drawing the eye to the focal area above the range. Glass-doored cabinets further customize the space and give the illusion of even more height within the room.
While her family may be grown and out of the house, Tina was focused on adding function without sacrificing a stunning aesthetic and dreamy finishes that make the kitchen the gathering place of any home. It was time to love her kitchen again, and if you’re wondering what she loves most, it’s the niche with glass door cabinetry and open shelving for display paired with the marble mosaic backsplash over the range and complimenting hood. Each of these features is a stunning point of interest within the kitchen – both brag-worthy additions to a perimeter layout that previously felt limited and lacking.
Whether your remodel is the result of special needs in your home or simply the excitement of focusing your energy on creating a fun new aesthetic, we are here for it. We love a good challenge because there is always a way to make a space better – adding function and beauty simultaneously.

This mudroom was designed to fit the lifestyle of a busy family of four. Originally, there was just a long, narrow corridor that served as the mudroom. A bathroom and laundry room were re-located to create a mudroom wide enough for custom built-in storage on both sides of the corridor. To one side, there is eleven feel of shelves for shoes. On the other side of the corridor, there is a combination of both open and closed, multipurpose built-in storage. A tall cabinet provides space for sporting equipment. There are four cubbies, giving each family member a place to hang their coats, with a bench below that provide a place to sit and remove your shoes. To the left of the cubbies is a small shower area for rinsing muddy shoes and giving baths to the family dog.

This remodeled kitchen was transformed from a tiny compact kitchen to a small scale kitchen with much improved flow and storage. The space has become the central location for family interaction. An arched wall of a breakfast room was removed to create a better flow and layout to the space. We created the remembrance of the original arch within the new cabinetry detail over the built in bench seating and also within the hood.

From two unused attic spaces, we built 2 walk-in closets, a walk-in storage space, a full bathroom, and a walk-in linen closet.
Each closet boasts 15 linear feet of shoe storage, 9 linear feet for hanging clothes, 50 cubic feet of drawer space, and 20 cubic feet for shelf storage. In one closet, space was made for a Tibetan bench that the owner wanted to use as a focal point. In the other closet, we designed a built-in hope chest, adding both storage and seating.
A full bathroom was created from a 5 foot linen closet, a 6 foot closet, and some of the attic space. The shower was custom designed for the space, with niches for toiletries and a custom-built bench. The vanity was also custom-built. The accent tile of the shower was used for the trim along the ceiling.
Spring Creek Design
This old farmhouse (ca. late 18th century) has undergone many renovations over the years. Spring Creek Design added its stamp in 2008, with a small mudroom addition and a complete interior renovation.
The addition encompasses a 1st floor mudroom with extensive cabinetry and closetry. Upon entering the space from the driveway, cabinet and countertop space is provided to accommodate incoming grocery bags. Next in line are a series of “lockers” and cubbies - just right for coats, hats and book bags. Further inside is a wrap-around window seat with cedar shoe racks beneath. A stainless steel dog feeding station rounds out the amenities - all built atop a natural Vermont slate floor.
On the lower level, the addition features a full bathroom and a “Dude Pod” - a compact work and play space for the resident code monkey. Outfitted with a stand-up desk and an electronic drum kit, one needs only emerge for Mountain Dew refills and familial visits.
Within the existing space, we added an ensuite bathroom for the third floor bedroom. The second floor bathroom and first floor powder room were also gutted and remodeled.
The master bedroom was extensively remodeled - given a vaulted ceiling and a wall of floor-to-roof built-ins accessed with a rolling ladder.
An extensive, multi-level deck and screen house was added to provide outdoor living space, with secure, dry storage below.
Design Criteria:
- Update house with a high sustainability standard.
- Provide bathroom for daughters’ third floor bedroom.
- Update remaining bathrooms
- Update cramped, low ceilinged master bedroom
- Provide mudroom/entryway solutions.
- Provide a window seating space with good visibility of back and side yards – to keep an eye on the kids at play.
- Replace old deck with a updated deck/screen porch combination.
- Update sitting room with a wood stove and mantle.
Special Features:
- Insulated Concrete Forms used for Dude Pod foundation.
- Soy-based spray foam insulation used in the addition and master bedroom.
- Paperstone countertops in mudroom.
- Zero-VOC paints and finishes used throughout the project.
- All decking and trim for the deck/screen porch is made from 100% recycled HDPE (milk jugs, soda, water bottles)
- High efficiency combination washer/dryer.

Beneath this large window with a tranquil view is a bench top made of hickory plywood that has a solid edge. Imagine reading or playing a board game on this bench that is as aesthetic and functional. It is built in hickory and stained in ‘american walnut’. Built-in open cubbies with wicker baskets are excellent for lots of hidden storage. The open framed doors are designed with an ogee outside profile and a furniture kick.
Tim Wood Limited
This walk in closet is part of a large property in central London. The client asked Tim Wood to come up with a storage solution for her extensive collection of shoes and handbags. Tim Wood designed and made shelving that would accommodate the exact proportions of her shoes. The rails that the handbags hang from were all specially moulded to echo the exact shape of the clients shoulder, so that they could retain their shape perfectly.
The closet houses over two hundred pairs of shoes, and can easily be expanded further to accommodate new purchases. The client is thrilled with this totally bespoke walk in closet that houses her prized collection of shoes such as Jimmy Choo, Gucci, Louboutin, Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Dolce Gabbana, Manolo Blanik, Emma Hope, Salvatore Ferragamo, Lanvin, Paul Smith and Guiseppe Zanotti.
The client has over seventy five handbags such as Prada, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Fendi, Dior, Gucci, Anya Hindmarch, Jimmy Choo, Bill Amberg, Lanvin, Mulberry, Chloe, Alexander McQueen, Dolce Gabbana, Michael Kors, Vivienne Westwood, Moschino, Diane von Furstenberg, Lulu Guinness, Marc Jacobs, DKNY, Stella McCartney, Roberto Cavalli, Bottega Veneta, Miu Miiu and Burberry.

An entry area to the home, this family laundry room became a catch-all for coats, bags and shoes. It also served as the laundry hub with a collection of portable drying racks, storage shelves and furniture that did not optimize the available space and layout. The new design made the most of the unique space and delivered an organized and attractive mud and laundry room with bench seating, hooks for hanging jackets and laundry needs, integrated wall drying racks, and lots of convenient storage.
