This was a major rework of the existing space. The owners entertain frequently so the traffic flow was improved with two openings from the family room instead of one. This enabled a centralized location for the entertainment bar inside the kitchen, complete with dishwasher drawers, a wine cooler, and small sink. The soft aqua walls compliment the white cabinets and grey and white granite counter-tops.

This design began with the choice of a simple Shaker style door for the cabinets, complemented by tall but plain crown molding. Somewhat more detailed carved wooden brackets support the island countertop and glass-front wall cabinets. A warm earth-colored stain with subtle burnishing gives the cabinetry a slight appearance of age without any overt distressing or glazing. Meanwhile, engineered quartz counters, a glass-and-stone mosaic tile backsplash, and a stainless steel faucet and sink introduce contemporary materials and sleek lines. These items also add texture and color to the room: the shine of metal, the glint of glass, the gray and white of the counter, and the creams, tans and blue-grays of the backsplash. Gray painted walls and gray ceramic tile floors pick up on the colors of the countertop and backsplash. Bar stools upholstered in a striped rust-and-gold fabric and pendant lights with amber-colored shades provide a bolder pop of color. With a roomy island that seats four and a 48-inch range with double oven, this kitchen can handle some serious cooking and entertaining.

This home in the Portland hills was stuck in the 70's with cedar paneling and almond laminate cabinets with oak details. (See Before photos) The space had wonderful potential with a high vaulted ceiling that was covered by a low ceiling in the kitchen and dining room. Walls closed in the kitchen. The remodel began with removal of the ceiling and the wall between the kitchen and the dining room. Hardwood flooring was extended into the kitchen. Shaker cabinets with contemporary hardware, modern pendants and clean-lined backsplash tile make this kitchen fit the transitional style the owners wanted. Now, the light and backdrop of beautiful trees are enjoyed from every room.

You’ll fall in love at first sight with the exterior of this beautiful French Country, French Provincial house plan, but just wait until you see the interior layout. The open floor plan is highlighted by a dramatic vaulted great room that opens onto a covered porch. This house is an entertainer’s dream, thanks to the large gourmet kitchen with a walk-in pantry and a large dining area. Nearby you’ll find space perfect for formal dining — or turn it into a playroom for the kids. There’s also flex space that could be either a guest suite or mother-in-law suite. The downstairs master suite features his and her’s walk-in closets. There are three large suites upstairs, plus space for an optional game room. This popular plan also includes a garage with 3-car dimensions and an optional basement.

Originally the hope was to open up the wall between the kitchen and dining room but, because this was a structural wall, it would have impacted the unit on the first floor below by forcing the owners into an unwanted construction project of their own. With this in mind, the next best option was to open up the non-structural wall between the kitchen and living room. To allow the owner to separate these two spaces as needed, a custom made, white oak pocket door (with frosted glass) and bi-fold doors over the wet bar were installed.
