This front yard makeover features a new formal stone walkway, stepping stone paths and lush plantings. This photo has been taken one year after completion. I also renovated the side yard terrace which had a railing. The railing was removed and I installed a sitting wall around the perimeter of the terrace and a new flagstone patio. I matched the stucco finish to the house. Lighting and a sound system has been built into the sitting walls. This renovation project is located in Southern Westchester.

Wiarton building stone front entrance was paired with Wiarton flagstone to create warm and welcoming front walkway entrance to house. Large pillars and angling steps where built to draw you towards the front doors on this pie shaped front yard.

The front yard was sloped down so a new retaining wall was built with matching brick work to the existing architecture. Inside the wall we planted a hedge to provide privacy for the new usable space as comfortable as any back yard patio space.

This seventies-modern Mansard roofed house was floating in a sea of concrete and needed to be anchored to the site.
The clients called upon designer Patrick L. Boyd-Lloyd, with David Rolston Landscape Architects, to help soften the harsh front yard that's only plantings were a formal edge of Cotoneaster glauca.
A large section of the circular driveway, that read as a small landing strip, was removed, leaving a generous walkway and a new entry auto-court delineated by tall grasses. The Hard-scape material is Exposed Aggregate and Sandblasted Concrete.
A simple, modern plant palette reflects the character of the house: Blue blooming Vitex trees and White Oak Leaf Hydrangeas add summer color, while Black Bamboo casts shadows on the pristine stucco walls, with wispy Ornamental Miscanthus Grass adding a slightly formal delineation. Contemporary Wok bowls, a Rolston signature accent, are used for spare accents of seasonal color.

This is the second project designed and executed for this client. They wanted a colorful water wise landscape that would be low maintenance. Designer had to replace the crumbling retaining wall and build new steps and a walk way. Many colorful, water wise plants were used.

The concept began with creating an international style modern residence taking full advantage of the 360 degree views of Sarasota downtown, the Gulf of Mexico, Sarasota Bay and New Pass. A court yard is surrounded by the home which integrates outdoor and indoor living.
This 6,400 square foot residence is designed around a central courtyard which connects the garage and guest house in the front, to the main house in the rear via fire bowl and lap pool lined walkway on the first level and bridge on the second level. The architecture is ridged yet fluid with the use of teak stained cypress and shade sails that create fluidity and movement in the architecture. The courtyard becomes a private day and night-time oasis with fire, water and cantilevered stair case leading to the front door which seconds as bleacher style seating for watching swimmers in the 60 foot long wet edge lap pool. A royal palm tree orchard frame the courtyard for a true tropical experience.
The façade of the residence is made up of a series of picture frames that frame the architecture and the floor to ceiling glass throughout. The rear covered balcony takes advantage of maximizing the views with glass railings and free spanned structure. The bow of the balcony juts out like a ship breaking free from the rear frame to become the second level scenic overlook. This overlook is rivaled by the full roof top terrace that is made up of wood decking and grass putting green which has a 360 degree panorama of the surroundings.
The floor plan is a reverse style plan with the secondary bedrooms and rooms on the first floor and the great room, kitchen and master bedroom on the second floor to maximize the views in the most used rooms of the house. The residence accomplishes the goals in which were set forth by creating modern design in scale, warmth, form and function.

⭐How to landscape the small Chicago front yard:
1. Create layers with various plant and shrub heights
2. Use plantings that have all season interest
3. Opt for a ground cover as an alternative to mowed grass
4. Hide electric boxes with tall grasses and evergreen shrubs
5. Elevate the luxury of the walkway with blue stone pavers
