Dear Garden Associates, Inc.
Gardens of every sort are an opportunity to enjoy the beauty found outdoors, including the often over-looked vegetable garden.
The use of a fence or enclosure of some sort is helpful in keeping the gardens fruits safe from the occasional dig-happy pet as well as less welcome marauders such as rabbits and deer. By enclosing the space the fence itself helps to create its own little world within.

Julie Moir Messervy Design Studio (JMMDS)
A pair of world travelers with a deep love of Japan asked JMMDS to design a Japanese-inspired landscape that would complement the contemporary renovation of their home in Edinburgh, Scotland. JMMDS created a plan that included a handsome cut-stone patio, meandering stepping stone paths, sweeping bed lines, stony mounds, a grassy pool of space, and swaths of elegant plantings.
JMMDS was on site during the installation to craft the mounds and place the plants and stones. Julie Moir Messervy set out the ancient pieces of gneiss from Scotland’s Isle of Lewis.
With the planting design, JMMDS sought to evoke the feeling of a traditional Japanese garden using locally suitable plants. The designers and clients visited nurseries in search of distinctive plant specimens, including cloud-pruned hollies, craggy pines, Japanese maples of varied color and habit, and a particularly notable Japanese snowbell tree. Beneath these, they laid drifts of sedges, hellebores, European gingers, ferns, and Solomon’s Seal. Evergreen azaleas, juniper, rhododendrons, and hebe were clustered around the lawn. JMMDS placed bamboos within root-controlled patio beds and planted mondo grass, sedums, and mosses among the stepping stones.

We extended and refurbished the Edwardian property by adding an infill single storey rear extension, loft conversion and by landscaping the garden. The addition of bi folding doors and skylights to the extension created a lighter and more vibrant kitchen and dining space. The loft conversion allowed for the addition of a double bedroom , a fabulous walk in wardrobe and victorian inspired bathroom. The victorian theme was carried throughout the house and completed with a very contemporary low maintance garden. The large garden includes a large heated dining area perfect for parties, a fire pit perfect to lounge and warm up next too on a crisp british evening as well as raised flower beds which look green and neat all year round. This home boasts the perfect harmony of contemporary design meets period features.

Meyer & Meyer, Inc. Architecture and Interiors
This house is an excellent example of Meyer & Meyer’s work transforming existing homes into classic New England shingle-style architecture. The owner’s program called for specific elements to be included in the design, including wraparound porches on the front of the house, a completely rebuilt second floor, and an addition to the north side that included a new master suite wing and library. The house sits on a high bluff with dramatic views of the Atlantic Ocean. The existing cottage’s foundation, chimney, and several window locations were retained. A pool house, family room and breezeway were added five years later.

Project Entry: The Potager Garden at Stonebridge Mansion
2013 PLNA Awards for Landscape Excellence Winner
Category: Theme Garden
Award Level: Bronze
Project Description:
The Potager Garden at Stonebridge Mansion was completed as part ofthe Oxford Arts Alliance 2011Decorator's Showcase. The Garden is a fun and productive garden featuring culinary & medicinal herbs, vegetables, and sustainable gardening concepts. Many sustainable practices can be seen throughout the project such as a compost bin, a rain water harvesting system, and use of many native herbs and vegetables.
A Potager is a French term for an ornamental vegetable garden or kitchen garden. We made sure to keep that in mind as we designed the space. By using a number of herbs that have both culinary and medicinal use we are trying to encourage the public to find more sustainable, home grown options for their own food and medicine. The project also features a vertical herbal wall which is a new idea taking shape in the industry. The wall allows you to provide herbs and vegetables with an optimum growing environment while saving an exorbitant amount of space. It gives people with limited space or poor growing conditions, such as people who live in cities an opportunity to grow their own herbs and vegetables. In addition to the herb wall, vegetables such as lettuce, spinach, beans, tomatoes, and many more can be seen throughout the garden. The garden is located adjacent to the kitchen of the residence to further enhance the garden to table idea. We hope that after seeing this fun themed garden people can both enjoy the space, but also try to apply many of the practices we show to their own landscape. We encouraged visitors to stroll through,or sit awhile in our garden, and learn about rain water harvesting, food crops, vertical gardening, and more!
