West Country Blacksmiths
Estate fencing and gate project at the Pencarrow house by West Country Blacksmiths. Designed and made in association with Hodgson Rural Consultancy & the English Heritage.
West Country Blacksmiths were honoured to be asked to bespoke design, make and install estate fencing and gates for Pencarrow House in Cornwall.
The smiths were tasked with restoring and reusing as many original cast iron dear fencing posts and wrought iron stock fence as possible, whilst also remaking and installing replica posts. These posts we used to reproduce a version of the original. The newly made post were made from steel and hot dip galvanised prior to painting to the colour of heritage black. These were posts were used to support 19 strand galvanised rope wire to produce many hundreds of meter of estate fencing.
Alongside the fencing was a number of estate style gate , some as a full size field gate and others as a pedestrian access gates. The gates were made traditional with hand forged detail and again finished with a galvanised and heritage black painted finish.

When we started work on this project in inner-city Sydney, the site contained a tiny, 1870s timber cottage that had been given a ‘make over’ in the 1950s. The original front fence had been replaced with a white brick wall, the garden had been largely concreted and a series of additions had been made at the rear. However, the site had one particular advantage – its location at the corner of a street and a pedestrian lane meant that it had aspects to both the North and the West.
The clients, a couple moving from Shanghai to Sydney, needed a house with three bedrooms, a substantial kitchen, generous living areas and a place to work from home. Early in the design process, it was decided that on-site car parking wasn’t a priority, as this would have taken up valuable space that could better be used as living area.
The design centres on a landscaped courtyard that runs along the Western boundary, directly adjacent to the pedestrian lane. The main entrance to the site was moved from the front of the cottage to the lane and the house is now entered via this new courtyard.
The open-plan living spaces and kitchen are arranged around the courtyard and connect directly into it so the courtyard functions as an extension of the living area. A small study is partially screened from the main living area by joinery.
On the first floor are two bedrooms and a bathroom that are accessible via a stair running parallel to the eastern boundary, alongside a panel of double-height glazing.
Natural light floods into the new part of the house from all sides and aluminium louvres and slatted timber awnings have been located to shade the interior in summer but allow the sun to penetrate in winter.
The scheme incorporates the original cottage which now contains a further bedroom and bathroom. With its own street entrance and garden, the cottage works well as a place for guests to stay. A new front fence and the restoration and reconstruction of original external features have recaptured some of this little building’s original character.
This decision to relocate the building entrance to the side lane was made initially for the benefit of the new house. However, it has also resulted in the enhancement of the laneway, adding landscaping and activity to a streetscape that generally consists of garage doors and side fences.

Stepping stones in a minimal gravel paved area lead past two lounge chairs to the intimate dining area. The herringbone-patterned limestone patio dissipates into a lush planting bed filled with loose swaths of shade-loving perennials and seasonal bulbs. Beech hedging, and formal clipped evergreens, surround the space and provide privacy, structure and winter interest to the garden. On axis to the main interior living space of the home, the fountain, is the focal point of the garden. A limestone water wall featuring an engraved pattern of fallen Honey Locust leaves nods to the centrally located mature Honey Locust tree that anchors the garden. Water, flowing down the wall, falls a short distance into a pool with a submerged limestone panel. The light noise of the falling water helps soften the sounds of the bustling downtown neighbourhood, creating a tranquil back drop for living and entertaining.

The client wanted a tropical-looking garden in his South-facing backyard, so an allée of very young, hardy palm trees was planted along the driveway. However, even the hardiest varieties of palms still need winter protection in this Canada 4b/5a - USDA Zone 4 climate. We obtained the expertise of a palm tree specialist in the Montreal area to purchase the hardiest palm varieties and ensure their successful survival over the winter. We planted them along the driveway (shown here at a 3-4 feet height, having already survived several winters here). The palm trees extend from the backstreet entrance all the way up to the house. We also added tropical-looking perennials in the bold colours the client preferred (see subsequent photos). Photo credit: E Jenvey

With a heritage overlay that dictated the original facade was to remain unchanged, the entire renovation had to be invisible from the street. The addition of a second storey, a double height entertaining area, outdoor kitchen, swimming pool and double garage to the rear, all had to be created behind the roof line of the original house, to be hidden from the street.
