Our client wanted to add a hot tub and new cabana to their poolscape. The cabana was designed with a bar in the front and pool equipment and storage in the back. The bar has a roll up door for winterising. A lounge area in front allows the home owners to enjoy a drink while watching the kids play in the pool. Flagstone patios, steps, and hot tub surround give this backyard a luxurious feel. The fence is built from custom milled Cedar horizontal boards. The fence is backed with black painted plywood for full privacy. A custom hot tub pit was built in order to use what is normally an above ground hot tub. The hot tub was supplied by Bonavista Pools. Composite lumber was used to build an access hatch for hot tub controls. Boxwood hedging frame the garden spaces. There are two Hydrangea Standard trees which are underplanted with begonias for a pop of colour. The existing Cedar hedge created a great backdrop and contrast for our Japanese Maple hedge. The existing Beech tree was stunning! Lawn area was necessary for the family pets.

Project Description:
Our client was ready to replace a deteriorating wood deck at the back of their home. They wanted to create an area where his wife and two daughters could enjoy the outdoors, occasional meal off the grill, and hang out with friends.
We were challenged to keep the outdoor room from sprawling over a rear yard with a consistently changing grade to the side property line and keeping some open lawn for the sports minded daughters. The area at the back property was wooded and owned by the homeowners association and not maintained.
Our design goals were to create a three season area to enjoy the grill year round and social space for family and friends. Oh yes,a place to read the newspaper and watch the Philly's.
The existing deck was surrounded by six foot Euonymus alatus, which we decided early on to save and transplant if possible. The Euonymus had been a part of the house since it was constructed. The Euonymus became a new screen, to separate the area from the property line. We created a landing large enough to tie the door, grill pavilion and patio areas together and the steps are good if more kids show up than expected. The dining and grilling area is under roof of a 12ft. x 18ft. pavilion. This structure provides a roofed enclosure. The interior roof is softly lighted and a fan provided to keep a comfortable breeze. The grill, table, and hardscape buffet provide all that is needed to dine and a spot to set the TV to keep up with the Philly's. After dinner the family can move down to the fireplace and hot tub area to relax and enjoy the evening. While Dad can spread out the sports page on the table and read the newspaper.
Brussel Block pavers, by Unilock, were choose for the casual tumbled quality and smooth clean surface to accommodate socks and bare feet. One inlay was placed just off the landing to be a central point of the outdoor space. Darker red colored Copthorne pavers, by Unilock, are used as accents both vertically and horizontally to be contiguous with the fireplace element. We set the fireplace at a 45 degree angle and set the wood boxes parallel and perpendicular to the fire box. This creates a cozy seating area and prevents the total layout from running straight across the rear ofthe house. We also constructed a customized the hearth to provide a wider sitting area. Coming from the garage we keep the same grade to the back kitchen door, dropped down one step to the patio and pavilion and then down two steps into the fireplace and hot tub area. This also breaks up the feeling of going straight across the back of the house. The grill island houses a Lynx grill and in the end of the grill island is a refrigerator so that everyone does not have to keep going behind the counter to get drinks. At the opposite end of the pavilion a hardscape buffet was built to provide more counter space for serving food and supplied with electricity to provide power for a TV,computer etc.
Low voltage pathway lighting was positioned along the walk from the drive to the back doors for security and safety along the path. Up lighting to the interior of the pavilion roof give an ambient light to the grill and dining area and minimal lighting to the fireplace which will radiate its own light. Control of the pavilion lights is located on the grill island. Low voltage lighting provides a great view along the back wood line. This light along the wood line expands visually the space allowing the backyard to become a great space for all to enjoy.
Our client's expectations were surpassed in meeting the challenge of our design goals.

Project Description:
On this project our client was looking to create an exterior environment that mirrored the eloquent, modern style of the interior of his home, while still feeling comfortable and welcoming. The interior had been updated with a contemporary feel. The owner is a person with high appreciation for art and architecture. He likes to entertain and does so in a casual fashion. The attention to detail of the interior space was the benchmark for the exterior space. Every room inside the house had a comfortable deliberate feel and the intent was to do the same with the exterior.
The hardscape of the exterior space had been renovated in the recent past. However it was done with poor workmanship and material selection. The softscape of the exterior space was well planned but had been done some time ago and had become overgrown. Given the disrepair of the hardscape we made the decision to completely rework the hardscape. On the softscape side we saw a great opportunity to take advantage of some mature plant material while adding some of our own selections. Our design goal was to create usable spaces from the time a guest would enter the landscape thus allowing them to enjoy the entire property. We also wanted to capitalize on views from the interior.
We start at the driveway where guest would arrive. The guests proceed down walkway with cedar and copper trellis on either side. The design of the trellises was drawn from an existing cedar pergola at the pool area. The guests would then reach a space where a 6' Basalt column fountain is located. The fountain is placed so that it is the focal point from the kitchen of the house through a two story corner window. The fountain is placed on a permeable paver surface for a clean look. The next area the guest would come upon is the fire feature space. The carved granite fire bowl was selected to complement the accent paver in the fountain and fire feature spaces. In both of these spaces a rustic tumbled paver was selected as the main field for a casual feel and a granite type accent paver was selected to add a touch of elegance. These two spaces were laid out to capitalize on the mature River Birch and Red Bud that provide an overhead plane to help define the spaces. An added touch of pine straw mulch was used to help brighten up these spaces and complements the mature nature of the property.
After leaving the fire feature area the guests would enter the pool surround. This is the space that was designated for the main entertaining area. The paver selection in this space was made to set a tone of sheer elegance. The border paver in this area was carried through from the other spaces to create continuity. Ample space was laid out for grilling, dinning and lounging. Off of the main area were two more spaces. The first of which is a recessed hot tub area. The placement of the hot tub was to be convenient to the pool area. The not tub was recessed so that it would not dominate the space. The final area was lawn space off of the back side of the pool area. This area allows you the opportunity to stroll through the landscape and enjoy the plant material.
Low voltage lighting was used in the landscape to accent plant material as well as extend the usability of the spaces at night. Along the perimeter of the property select plant material is lighted to provide a sense of depth. Special features such as the fountain and pergola were also lighted. The 6' Basalt fountain makes a huge statement from both inside and outside the house.
In the end the project achieved the goals we set out for and exceed the expectations our client.
