This Georgian style home was built 15 years ago. My clients wanted to open up three small and congested rooms to create a large, light and bright open plan living, kitchen and dining space. We removed interior walls and completely redesigned the kitchen layout to make the best use of the space to suit family requirements. The owners now find this area the absolute heart of their home and spend most of their time here.
Our inspiration came from the roots of the Georgian style. We wanted to create a timeless yet future proofed modern home to suit the homeowners and their young grandchildren who often visit. The kitchen's central design feature was 'garden' inspired - we intended to bring the outside in with the use of colours, natural lighting, decor and shaker kitchen style. The finished space is remnant of a traditional Orangery, not merely an open plan kitchen dining space. Sticking with the natural feel, we used limestone throughout which thanks to the underfloor heating makes the space wonderfully warm, cosy and uncluttered.

SP Gardens - Susanna Pagan Landscape Design

In keeping with this year’s Fair Garden theme - Cosmic Spaces - garden designer Susanna Pagan has created a celestial garden inspired by Van Gogh’s painting Starry Night. Our sustainable garden has a variety of garden that has features the average homeowner can recreate in a small yard on a modest budget. The space is ethereal, light and airy and plays on the sky, the moon and the stars. Dappled with white flowering plants, the moon garden uses silvery succulents and grey foliage that reflects the moonlight and contrasts with nearby greens, blues and purples. The color palette - an evening mist white, a star spangled cobalt blue, a twilight sky blue, and glowing green of moon light- beckons the homeowner to relax on the patio, sit back and gaze at the heavens above.

More about the project.
This young couple has a creative back ground, one being an actor and the other being a teacher who inspires others. They now enjoy a new historical home with amazing touches of modern styling and comforts. The home was designed by renowned architect Irving Gill in 1905 and is on the historical register but it only applies to the exterior of the home. The brick pillar is an original feature from the home's turn-of-the-century stove. The window casings were built to replicate the original Douglas Fir windows as seen on Gill's original plans, and all the molding was redone in his signature flush style as well. The central feature in this kitchen is the Yellow Italian Bertazzoni Range with a single herringbone tiled back splash. The cabinetry is a light gray paired perfectly with a dark "graphite" gray island, and industrial vents at the toe kick enhance the overall look.

I was so inspired by the nature that surrounds this property. It’s on almost three acres of land in Orange County, California! Located in an equestrian area called the Back Bay- an active estuary with all sorts of wildlife. I was also inspired by the idea of creating a garden that needs only supplemental water during the hottest months of the year once established.

Welcome To My Garden
The black-bamboo fencing was attached horizontally on an existing stockade fencing for support to create the Asian effect. A raised planting bed was created using the bamboo in the meditation area. This area was created to have a space that their Mastiff dog wouldn't enter.

Surrounded by the Pacific Northwest native woodlands of Bridle Trails State Park, this property strongly connects to the neighboring landscape through its garden design. Inspired by the Bridle Trails woodlands, the homeowners requested "more wild, less style" in the design of the garden, which thus became the driving theme and idea behind the conceptual design creation. The final design achieves a balance between wilderness and design, and connects the inside residence to the outdoor landscape.
This four-season garden features a plant palette mainly restricted to the Pacific Northwest, including natives and plants that thrive and flourish in the northwest climate. A series of large terraces and wood deck and built spaces closer to the home transition to a more naturalistic scene of Japanese maples, conifers, and understory shrubs. Several features to the garden include art pieces commissioned to local artists, as well as stone steps and a cut-slate Pennsylvania antique bluestone patio floor.
