Vogue Kitchens
As part of a rear extension leading to a garden via two sets of bi-folding doors, this bright open plan kitchen comprises a larger lifestyle space with a living and dining area. It was designed by Jo Johal, managing director of Vogue Kitchens, using furniture by premium German brand, Leicht. The client has a large family, is a keen cook and likes to regularly entertain, so the kitchen was designed with those requirements in mind.
This contemporary handleless kitchen features a wealth of storage with one wall featuring a run of tall lacquered gloss cabinets in Frosty White colourway with carcases in Platinum, together with overhead cupboards in the same finish that are lit from beneath via LED’s. Further undercounter units and pull-out drawers are also in Platinum and integrated within the undercounter storage is a 60cm Siemens dishwasher. Internal storage is highly detailed with lots of shelving, drawer units and a full cookware centre incorporated.
Breaking the run of overhead units is a section of backlit decorative shelving for glassware and crockery. To the right of the kitchen the tall units include an integrated fridge and freezer, and to the left there are further tall cabinets that house a bank of ovens by Siemens, which include a 60cm oven next to a 45cm steam oven with a 14cm warming drawer beneath – all fitted at waist level to make it easier to view what’s cooking. Situated within the Quartzform worktop against the back wall is a wet area for food preparation with a sink and tap by Blanco and a Boiling Water Tap by Quooker.
The central island is designed so that the cook can face out to the room, whilst entertaining. It is also designed in an L-shape to accommodate seating on two sides. The undercounter units are featured in a laminate finish in Liton grey colourway and the Quartzform worktop in Veined Michelangelo corresponds with the same worktop colour behind. Installed within are two types of hobs, a 90cm gas hob and 30cm domino induction hob, all by Siemens. A the front of the island is a 60cm wine cooler by Caple, while a ceiling extractor by Air Uno is directly above. Three long pendant lights are located above the island.
Howells Architecture + Design
Designed for a 1930s Portland, OR home, this kitchen remodel aims for a clean, timeless sensibility without sacrificing the space to generic modernism. Cherry cabinets, Ice Stone countertops and Heath tile add texture and variation in an otherwise sleek, pared down design. A custom built-in bench works well for eat-in breakfasts. Period reproduction lighting, Deco pulls, and a custom formica table root the kitchen to the origins of the home.

The shaker style has proven to very popular this year, with nearly every handmade kitchen we have featured on our site, created in the shaker style! It’s not surprising though, when they look this good. For this particular project we have used a combination of natural oak with a light lacquer on the two furniture runs. These feature our high quality 30mm frame and door construction with a birch veneer interior, materials that will enable this kitchen to last many, many years. The handles are one that we actually have on a display in our showroom. A verdigris handle with an interesting pattern.
On this project we have a couple of bespoke furniture features, the first of which is the custom oak shutter system for the counter top unit. The special unit uses a roller shutter that has lots of narrow oak slats that move seamlessly up and out of the way to reveal the toaster and two shelves. The second is the pull out shelves in two of the 900 base units. These use modern soft close runners that enable you to pull out the shelves and easily access everything stored on them. This removes the need of having to get very low to try and find that bowl right at the back that you don’t always use, a great feature we believe.
The final great feature of this kitchen is the walk in larder, this uses a bespoke birch veneered plywood construction, and the lovely thing about this material is the beautiful layering you get on the edges of the ply. The outer doors of the larder were also made by us, they are solid oak and feature a tear drop opening on the front. Inside one of the doors we have created a bespoke spice rack.
Inside of the larder you can see the plywood layered edges as well as the extra deep drawers. These have a sweeping profile with a hand-scoop at the front. All of these run on modern soft-close runners. Above the drawers you have three staggered shelves, all of which are deep and provide a huge amount of storage space.

The villa kitchen provides the perfect setting. The large window over the sink looks out to a deck dining area. Stainless steel countertops are easy to care for. Warm and cool are combined by setting off the stainless steel faced cabinetry with a deep red wall, wood accents and red sisal rug. Open shelves for often-used dishware allow for convenience as well as a sense of rhythm and repetition, one of Jane's favorite motifs. The result is a kitchen that imbues the food -- and the kitchen conversation -- with lively energy.

In Detail Interiors
This new home is a study in eclectic contrasts. The client loves modern design yet still wanted to blend a bit of her southern traditional heritage into the overall feel of her new home. The goal and challenge was to combine functionality in a large space with unique details that spoke to the client’s love of artisitic creativity and rich materials.
With 14 foot ceilings the challenge was to not let the kitchen space “underwhelm” the rest of the open floor plan as the kitchen, dining and great room all are part of the larger footprint. To this end, we designed a modern enclosure that allowed additional height and heft to help balance the “weight” of the kitchen with the other areas.
The long island designed for entertaining features a custom designed iron “table” housing the microwave drawer and topped with a checkboard endgrain cherry and walnut wood top. This second “island” is part of the rich details that define the kitchen.
The upper cabinets have unusual triple ring iron inserts, again, designed for the unexpected use of material richness..along with the antique mirror rather than glass as the background.
The platter rack on the end of the left side elevation also replicates the iron using it for the dowels.
The panels on the Subzero refrigerator are crafted from burled walnut veneer chosen to echo the browns and blacks throughout much of the furnishings.
The client did not want or need a large range as we planned a second ancillary oven for the pantry/laundry space around the corner. When I pointed out the capacity of the Wolf 36 inch range was actually larger than a 30 inch oven, it sealed the deal for only one oven in the main cooking center. We did not want the cooking area to be dwarfed however, so used a custom black cold rolled steel hood that is 60 inches long. The panels on the Sub Zero refrigerator are another blend of eclectic materials.
Along the left side cabinetry where the cabinets die into the wall, we chose to run the calcutta gold marble 4x16 stone up the wall and utilize thick glass shelves for some visual interest in this corner. Also, this corner would be tough to access with doors. I liked the prep sink area to feel open and airy as well.
This beautiful kitchen is quite unique that combines functionality in a large space with one of a kind details!

Smith & Ragsdale Interior Design
While this new home had an architecturally striking exterior, the home’s interior fell short in terms of true functionality and overall style. The most critical element in this renovation was the kitchen and dining area, which needed careful attention to bring it to the level that suited the home and the homeowners.
As a graduate of Culinary Institute of America, our client wanted a kitchen that “feels like a restaurant, with the warmth of a home kitchen,” where guests can gather over great food, great wine, and truly feel comfortable in the open concept home. Although it follows a typical chef’s galley layout, the unique design solutions and unusual materials set it apart from the typical kitchen design.
Polished countertops, laminated and stainless cabinets fronts, and professional appliances are complemented by the introduction of wood, glass, and blackened metal – materials introduced in the overall design of the house. Unique features include a wall clad in walnut for dangling heavy pots and utensils; a floating, sculptural walnut countertop piece housing an herb garden; an open pantry that serves as a coffee bar and wine station; and a hanging chalkboard that hides a water heater closet and features different coffee offerings available to guests.
The dining area addition, enclosed by windows, continues to vivify the organic elements and brings in ample natural light, enhancing the darker finishes and creating additional warmth.

Normandy Remodeling
This white kitchen with soft grays throughout was created by Normandy Designer Ann Stockard. In this project, the homeowners desired an updated look that also reflected their personal style. It was also very important that the kitchen had a smooth flow, so Ann created a banquette for added seating and to improve the flow when family and friends visit. She also placed the refrigerator in a wall with ample storage around it to make food preparation easier and more time efficient. The open shelving provides the homeowners easy access to dishes they use every day and adds visual interest, which leaving the space open and bright. Gray is a huge trend in kitchens, so Ann incorporated soft grays in the beadboard behind the open shelving, as well as the storage cabinetry around the refrigerator. Overall, this kitchen is spot on with kitchen trends, while meeting the highly functional needs of the homeowners.
