Our architecture team was proud to design this traditional, cottage inspired home that is tucked within a developed residential location in St. Louis County. The main levels account for 6097 Sq Ft and an additional 1300 Sq Ft was reserved for the lower level. The homeowner requested a unique design that would provide backyard privacy from the street and an open floor plan in public spaces, but privacy in the master suite.
Challenges of this home design included a narrow corner lot build site, building height restrictions and corner lot setback restrictions. The floorplan design was tailored to this corner lot and oriented to take full advantage of southern sun in the rear courtyard and pool terrace area.
There are many notable spaces and visual design elements of this custom 5 bedroom, 5 bathroom brick cottage home. A mostly brick exterior with cut stone entry surround and entry terrace gardens helps create a cozy feel even before entering the home. Special spaces like a covered outdoor lanai, private southern terrace and second floor study nook create a pleasurable every-day living environment. For indoor entertainment, a lower level rec room, gallery, bar, lounge, and media room were also planned.
Techo-Bloc
This backyard patio design is inspired by our Travertina Raw patio slab. The Travertina Raw patio slab mimics the texture of natural travertine in a concrete material; making it a more durable option in harsher freeze-thaw climates. Pave luxurious poolsides, patios, walkways and backyards with this travertine stone alternative. This product line has enjoyed huge success and has now been improved with an ultra robust mix design, making it far more durable than the natural travertine stone alternative. Techo-Bloc has now extended the collection to a double-sided, structural retaining wall system, two wall caps and pool coping in order to fulfill customer demand for this luxurious product. https://www.techo-bloc.com/shop/slabs/travertina-raw-slab/
Marcin Noga
Marcin Noga captured this spectacular house in Highgate in 2013. It offers more than 4,500 sq ft of light-flooded modernist living space on a site of approximately a quarter of an acre.
The discreet front elevation offers little idea of the dynamic accommodation within. Upon entering the property, the visitor passes through a courtyard before being greeted by a wall of glass that opens onto a rectilinear lap pool. To one side, the accommodation spreads beyond the kitchen to a dining area and sitting room with another glass wall providing views over roofs and treetops. The sense of space is extraordinary, with narrow columns providing structural support and a poured concrete floor running throughout. Stunning!

Designed as a home and studio for a photographer and his young family, Lightbox is located on a peninsula that extends south from British Columbia across the border to Point Roberts. The densely forested site lies beside a 180-acre park that overlooks the Strait of Georgia, the San Juan Islands and the Puget Sound.
Having experienced the world from under a black focusing cloth and large format camera lens, the photographer has a special fondness for simplicity and an appreciation of unique, genuine and well-crafted details.
The home was made decidedly modest, in size and means, with a building skin utilizing simple materials in a straightforward yet innovative configuration. The result is a structure crafted from affordable and common materials such as exposed wood two-bys that form the structural frame and directly support a prefabricated aluminum window system of standard glazing units uniformly sized to reduce the complexity and overall cost.
Accessed from the west on a sloped boardwalk that bisects its two contrasting forms, the house sits lightly on the land above the forest floor.
A south facing two-story glassy cage for living captures the sun and view as it celebrates the interplay of light and shadow in the forest. To the north, stairs are contained in a thin wooden box stained black with a traditional Finnish pine tar coating. Narrow apertures in the otherwise solid dark wooden wall sharply focus the vibrant cropped views of the old growth fir trees at the edge of the deep forest.
Lightbox is an uncomplicated yet powerful gesture that enables one to view the subtlety and beauty of the site while providing comfort and pleasure in the constantly changing light of the forest.

This 6,500 sf home is located on a narrow parcel of land overlooking the Long Island Sound. The architectural vernacular for the home is influenced by the works of Frank Lloyd Wright, as well as the craftsman homes of Greene & Greene.
“A life spent focused on the outdoors” was the dream envisioned for this site by the client. The home addresses that vision through its organization. The plan focuses its attention towards three exterior terraces, each with unique vistas and solar exposures. By creating exterior living spaces and situating large expanses of glass towards them, light penetrates deeply into the home, and views of the landscape become the backdrop of the client’s daily life.
The project consists of a main house and guest/garage wing. By juxtaposing the two forms, a slate-covered courtyard was formed in between, which acts as a welcoming entry for visitors.

With generous overhangs, shaded terraces, operable systems, and solar cells, the house embraces Sarasota’s subtropical latitude as it opens to the rear courtyard. The tall, thin and narrow main house is oriented east to west. On the entire length of the house, the roof overhangs 16 feet, shading the yard and creating a cooler microclimate around the pool. The space under the overhanging roof serves as a verandah mediating the climate.
The overhang is created by light steel trusses from which a balcony is suspended. A continuous clerestory runs between the trusses. The entry is through a smaller court recessed in the south elevation. The entry court is shaded by translucent photovoltaic panels.

Settling here from overseas, the owners of this house in Primrose Hill chose the area for its quintessentially English architecture and bohemian feel. They loved the property’s original features and wanted their new home to be light and spacious, with plenty of storage and an eclectic British feel. As self-confessed ‘culture vultures’, the couple’s art collection formed the basis of their home’s colour palette. Originally set over four-storeys, the property was tall and narrow with boxy rooms, which made it feel dark and poky. Custom joinery was designed in a myriad of different styles for each room to house the family’s belongings. The ceiling height was increased to create a bright, open family kitchen-diner, which leads to a courtyard garden. There’s a fresh, energetic palette, with aqua-blue and white kitchen cabinetry complemented by fashionable ice cream shades in the dining area. A colourful bespoke rug and contemporary artwork provide the finishing touches. Custom-made cabinetry sits within an alcove housing children’s books, toys and a TV, while further storage is concealed beneath a smart upholstered banquette. In the master suite, a corridor of stylish soft pink panelling conceals floor-to-ceiling wardrobes and leads to a stunning antique mirrored doorway, behind which is a generous marble-clad en-suite bathroom.

18” adobe bricks serve as structure and interior/ exterior finish. The client requested that this ancient building material be updated to a modern aesthetic, so we designed using tall, narrow openings with steel lintels and left the natural, coarse texture. Antiques and art from the area (both old and new) are showcased throughout the property. Art niches made of steel are integrated into the adobe walls.

This client wanted to experience Santa Fe in Sierra Madre. Challenges were the steep hillside lot, great views, fire concerns and narrow car access. We created a rustic home with a low profile, lush surroundings and an air of quiet tranquility.
This rustic southwestern house uses reclaimed vegas and logs for the structural system and asphalt emulsion mud adobe walls for the finish. The house is like an adobe village separated into four structures connected by verandas, courtyards and log bridges.

The owners were downsizing from a large ornate property down the street and were seeking a number of goals. Single story living, modern and open floor plan, comfortable working kitchen, spaces to house their collection of artwork, low maintenance and a strong connection between the interior and the landscape. Working with a long narrow lot adjacent to conservation land, the main living space (16 foot ceiling height at its peak) opens with folding glass doors to a large screen porch that looks out on a courtyard and the adjacent wooded landscape. This gives the home the perception that it is on a much larger lot and provides a great deal of privacy. The transition from the entry to the core of the home provides a natural gallery in which to display artwork and sculpture. Artificial light almost never needs to be turned on during daytime hours and the substantial peaked roof over the main living space is oriented to allow for solar panels not visible from the street or yard.
