The Designory
The owners of this Randwick semi-detached home came to The Designory looking to improve the overall flow and use of the home, update the joinery throughout and redesign their open plan kitchen. The brief for the kitchen design was to create an improved flow from the entrance to the house through to the open plan Kitchen, Dining and Living areas as well as improve the storage and layout for a more functional cooking and entertaining space.
The client a creative herself, also loved a palette of timber, natural stones, greys with small hints of interests. The Designory team worked closely with the owners to bring the project to life by opening the spaces further to create a true indoor/outdoor connection and selecting special personal elements to create a bespoke finished project that the client loved.

An oak breakfast bar wraps around two sides of the island. This creates comfortable seating for three or four guests. The island itself purposefully lacks appliances, our clients felt that they didn't want the dining space interfered with by a cooking area on the island. However, there is ample space for food preparation on the island, encouraging food prep to take place alongside the informal seating area.

With the extension completed, the couple have added an exceptional open plan kitchen and dining area to their property. This enabled them to convert the original dining room into a living area as part of one enormous, bright and contemporary space for everyone to enjoy, including their newborn baby and their dog.

The driving impetus for this Tarrytown residence was centered around creating a green and sustainable home. The owner-Architect collaboration was unique for this project in that the client was also the builder with a keen desire to incorporate LEED-centric principles to the design process. The original home on the lot was deconstructed piece by piece, with 95% of the materials either reused or reclaimed. The home is designed around the existing trees with the challenge of expanding the views, yet creating privacy from the street. The plan pivots around a central open living core that opens to the more private south corner of the lot. The glazing is maximized but restrained to control heat gain. The residence incorporates numerous features like a 5,000-gallon rainwater collection system, shading features, energy-efficient systems, spray-foam insulation and a material palette that helped the project achieve a five-star rating with the Austin Energy Green Building program.

The decision to remodel your kitchen isn't one to take lightly. But, if you really don't enjoy spending time there, it may be time for a change. That was the situation facing the owners of this remodeled kitchen, says interior designer Vernon Applegate.
"The old kitchen was dismal," he says. "It was small, cramped and outdated, with low ceilings and a style that reminded me of the early ‘80s."
It was also some way from what the owners – a young couple – wanted. They were looking for a contemporary open-plan kitchen and family room where they could entertain guests and, in the future, keep an eye on their children. Two sinks, dishwashers and refrigerators were on their wish list, along with storage space for appliances and other equipment.
Applegate's first task was to open up and increase the space by demolishing some walls and raising the height of the ceiling.
"The house sits on a steep ravine. The original architect's plans for the house were missing, so we needed to be sure which walls were structural and which were decorative," he says.
With the walls removed and the ceiling height increased by 18 inches, the new kitchen is now three times the size of the original galley kitchen.
The main work area runs along the back of the kitchen, with an island providing additional workspace and a place for guests to linger.
A color palette of dark blues and reds was chosen for the walls and backsplashes. Black was used for the kitchen island top and back.
"Blue provides a sense of intimacy, and creates a contrast with the bright living and dining areas, which have lots of natural light coming through their large windows," he says. "Blue also works as a restful backdrop for anyone watching the large screen television in the kitchen."
A mottled red backsplash adds to the intimate tone and makes the walls seem to pop out, especially around the range hood, says Applegate. From the family room, the black of the kitchen island provides a visual break between the two spaces.
"I wanted to avoid people's eyes going straight to the cabinetry, so I extended the black countertop down to the back of the island to form a negative space and divide the two areas," he says.
"The kitchen is now the axis of the whole public space in the house. From there you can see the dining room, living room and family room, as well as views of the hills and the water beyond."

Paper House Project
The brief focussed on creating a large living space to the rear of the property, freeing up floor area at the front to add an additional bedroom, WC, and utility. Set within a five-storey terraced property the extensive reconfiguration and extension at lower ground floor presented a number of technical and strategic issues. Through a series of substantial structural interventions, we were able to create a large open plan kitchen/living/dining with direct access to the garden.
In order to minimise the impact on neighbours outside whilst maximising a sense of space and volume inside, a deep pitched roof extension with large skylights was added. The resulting space, vaulted with large floor to ceiling heights and bathed in natural light, provides an open plan living arrangement suitable for a growing family.

This soft contemporary home was uniquely designed to evoke a coastal design feeling while maintaining a Hill Country style native to its environment. The final design resulted in a beautifully minimalistic, transparent, and inviting home. The light exterior stucco paired with geometric forms and contemporary details such as galvanized brackets, frameless glass and linear railings achieves the precise coastal contemporary look the clients desired. The open floor plan visually connects multiple rooms to each other, creating a seamless flow from the formal living, kitchen and family rooms and ties the upper floor to the lower. This transparent theme even begins at the front door and extends all the way through to the exterior porches and views beyond via large frameless glazing. The overall design is kept basic in form, allowing the architecture to shine through in the detailing.
