Often, less is more. Take this landscape design composed of climbing roses, hydrangeas, and lilies surrounding a bluestone terrace. This small, suburban garden feels both expansive and intimate. Japanese forest grass softens the edge of the terrace and adds just enough of a modern look to make the garden’s owners, urban transplants, happy. “My husband and I were looking for an outdoor space that had a secret-garden feeling,” says homeowner Anne Lillis-Ruth. “We’ve had fun adding furniture, antique planters, and a stone fountain to [landscape designer] Robert Welsch’s beautiful landscape. The white and green plantings provide the perfect backdrop to my collection of colorful table linens, glassware, and china. We love our garden!”
Dean Fisher loved it, too. “The setting is so lovely and relaxed. It evokes the south of France, with its intimate scale and the integration of house and patio through the use of the vines and other plantings.”

This front dropoff has a gated entry into a courtyard space. The climbing roses arch over the arbor cascading down their scent when in bloom.

The front yard had no path to the sidewalk - the arch had been bricked up long ago. Along with a dead lawn it was as welcoming as a no trespassing sign. I opened up the arch and added a gently curving path to the sidewalk flanked by ethereal pink rose bushes (Cape Cod) that seem to be forever blooming. Now the front yard graciously invites you in.

Sheltered from strong southerly winds, the glass breezeway opens to embrace the working fields to the south. The paver patio is bound by a stone wall and arbor and was carefully sited around and under a 50 year old ornamental cherry. This farmstead is located in the Northwest corner of Washington State. The stairs flanked by pots for herbs lead to a curving pathway. It ends at the sunken circular stone terrace and a fire bowl. The 3 arched trellises form a doorway between the newly planted garden and the view terrace with a retaining/seating wall. The large water pot feature baffles the urban noise. The open grid swing trellis matches the rose trellis and echoes the chicken coop architecture. Clematis, Star jasmine vines and roses will grow up the grids--the first purple blooms show in the picture! The expansive view is enjoyed from everywhere. Berms around the terrace and inside the curve of the path create visual interest and the feeling of moving through the landscape. Down cast path lighting creates safety at night with a minimum of light pollution. The huge sequoia tree is softly lighted for night interest. The original fence will be soon be covered with many flowering vines.
