Yakisugi (焼杉) is a traditional Japanese method of wood preservation. Yaki means to heat with fire, and sugi is cypress.[1][2] It is referred to in the West as burnt timber cladding and also known as shou sugi ban (焼杉板) which uses the same kanji characters but an incorrect pronunciation. The ban character means "plank". By slightly charring the surface of the wood without combusting the whole piece, the wood becomes water-proof through the carbonisation and is thus more durable.[3][4] It also protects against insects, as well as making the wood fire retardant.[5] - Wikipedia

Working in Harmony with Nature One of the most remarkable aspects of this project is how the pergola and the clam shell-colored Trex deck were thoughtfully designed to complement and highlight the existing large red oak tree. The Wisteria was leaning and completely entwined with an old obelisk, so rather than cutting it out and starting again we pruned carefully, keeping some long stems, then supported the plant - obelisk and all - against the new curved arbour. This photo was taken the first spring after the garden was completed. Wisteria is perfect for growing over an arbour so that you can look up at it, and the scent is held within the space.

The clients are a sociable couple who wanted a garden that had year round interest, low maintenance and that they could entertain in. The garden is covered by a frame work of Oak beams providing a sense of enclosure. In time the scented star jasmine climbers will cover the fences and the beams, planting around the upper garden and below the bespoke corner bench will immerse the space in green. Low maintenance porcelain paving with an inset clay paver feature adds interest. A lounge area, Dining space, BBQ unit and bike store all built in Iroko hard wood. Small gardens have to work hard to balance function with aesthetic!
