View of the wine wall which was designed to hold and display 128 bottles of wine! The glazed doors on either side of the wine wall were crafted from Accoya wood and finished in house with Farrow & Ball Railings, while the cabinets were made from walnut. Once crafted, the central carcasses were fitted with a series of solid brass bars—slotted in by hand. This complemented the brass inlay which was inserted throughout the panels. To finish off this centrepiece, an antique mirror effect wallpaper was fitted on the back wall to create a sense of opulence and to reflect light around the room. This temperature-controlled wine cellar can house over 1000 bottles. The custom cabinetry went through about 3 different versions between using a premanufactured cabinet vs designing and having a local cabinet company make it. Using the different styles of racks, X cabinets and grid styles of wine storage added to the beauty of this space. The custom table in the middle is for tastings and the back wall cabinet was designed to house all the tools needed for opening up a bottle and the shelves are used to display wine glasses and pictures of their travels. The natural look was used to help showcase the wine bottles as the labels added color. Design Connection, Inc. Kansas City interior designer provided space planning, architectural drawings, barstools, tile, plumbing fixtures, countertops, cabinets and hardware, lighting, paint colors, coordination with the builder and project management to ensure that the high standards of Design Connection, Inc. were maintained.

This wine wall started as a blank wall and is directly across from the dining room. My clients wanted a beautiful wine wall refrigerator to house all of the wine they collect. In order for the wine wall to recede we painted the surround the same color as the wall. The back of the wine wall refrigerator is a beautiful walnut finish that ties in with the color of the kitchen cabinetry. The hardware is streamlined and makes reaching for a bottle of your favorite Pino Noir a treat. The lighting is a soft beautiful glow to be enjoyed at any time of the day.

What should I include in my wine cellar?

This depends on the size of your collection – or how big you hope it becomes. If you enjoy quaffing, you may want to invest in a walk-in cooler with wall-mounted wine racks and several tall wine fridges, as well as a tasting area with bar stools. If you’re a beginner or have a small collection, a home bar with mini fridge and wine rack will suffice. Essential bar accessories include wine glasses, corkscrews, carafes and aerators.

How should I store my wine?

Temperature control is at the core of a functional wine cellar. Your bottles need to be kept out of direct sunlight, and away from the heat and steam of kitchen appliances. A room that is too warm will make your wine age faster, oxidise and lose its character and flavour. If bottles are corked, they also need to be laid down. Your architect or designer will be able to help you create the ideal conditions for your home collection.

Where should I position my wine cooler?

The most important thing to consider is ease of access, which is why kitchens are the most common place to position wine coolers. Should you have minimal floor space, a small one could even sit comfortably on your countertop. If quaffing requires an occasion or you frequently host dinner parties, consider your dining room, so you can top up people’s glasses without having to leave the room. You could also make your bar fridge or cooler a destination within your entertainment or games room. There’s no denying that Aussies love to entertain and enjoy a glass or two outdoors, so if you’re lucky enough to have a covered outdoor area, this could be just the place for a cooler, too. Just ensure it doesn’t experience any extreme weather or long periods of direct sunlight.
