“Lorena Checa was the designer of two renovation projects in our Washington D.C. home. The first was in the early 1990's where she designed an expansion of our home enlarging bedrooms, living area, a bathroom and creating a utility room on the 2nd floor. All of this was done without increasing the footprint of the house. The second design project in 2011 was enlarging the bathroom in the master bedroom. This project involved demolition of the existing 1920's bathroom and a closet and replacing them with a modern bath including Thassos marble floors, glass tile walls, granite counters on custom designed cherry cabinets, special lighting, new custom etched glass windows and doors and a glass shower enclosure. Three particular strengths come to mind when I think of Checa Architects. The most important, to me, is Lorena Checa's ability to listen carefully to a client's vision, translate it into a project that can actually be constructed and then present you with a design which matches your vision but is vastly improved by her imagination and knowledge. The second is the depth of her knowledge of both design and construction. She can envision not only how a space will flow but also how it can be enhanced by the materials used. Her understanding of how different materials and fixtures will appear and will operate in real world situations is invaluable. She also has a vast source of artisans and suppliers for many one-of-a-kind solutions to difficult design problems. Finally, Checa Architects are problem-solving perfectionists which is exactly the combination you want designing and overseeing your construction project.”

“We met with Ileana to discuss possible renovation ideas to our 1960s house to open up the space and to re-think our upstairs bathrooms. She designed the project in a way that allowed us to consider the two pieces (upstairs and downstairs) both separately and together. We originally thought we would focus on the upstairs initially, but we were so happy with the redesigned first floor that we ended up deciding to tackle this project first. We contracted with a local company to do the work, and they have had no problems following Ileana's architectural drawings.”

“As an architectural photographer, I have known and worked for Amy Gardner of Gardner Mohr Architects for more than five years. She is one of a group of architects that is thinking about the future and how she can utilize her generous talents to make better more sustainable and environmentally friendly buildings. I have found her designs to be invigorating. The spaces eminently functional and her designs to utilize the available light and air flow to be of equal magnitude. In short, the spaces and buildings are livable, functional, breathing spaces that are simply exiting and fun to be in. It has always been my pleasure to photograph these spaces and to convey with a photograph what Gardner Mohr Architects have created.”

“We hired RLA to design our custom house which was recently completed in March 2015. We couldn't be happier with the results and would recommend them to any prospective home builder. From the beginning, we knew we did not want the standard cookie cutter two story colonial that is everywhere in our area, we wanted a custom house with a modern esthetic, not an existing builder plan with a few modifications. Builders will typically tell you that you do not need an architect, and that may be true from a construction perspective, but by forgoing an architect, you lose the opportunity to build a really special house, customized exactly to your needs. It does not add that much extra to the cost. From the beginning, RLA listened to our ideas, paid attention to our budget and designed our home to our exact specifications. While there are many illustrations of how this benefited us, here are three examples: Orientation - we wanted a house that would take the best advantage of natural light and available views. RLA worked hard to orient our house properly on the site and we now have great light, great views and privacy where we want it. The room layout also makes maximum usage of available light and each room has a great view. A builder will just plop your house on the site facing the street, regardless of the orientation of sunlight or privacy. Details - RLA incorporated details in our house that give it that custom, personalized look. Our deep soffitt details, rock stair wall and porch are really unique. Proportions - This is a hard one to describe, but RLA did a great job with sizing details, the proportions including room sizes, trim details, etc. Everything in the house flows beautifully and feels balanced and gracious. Architects understand how big rooms should be! Not to big or too small. My advice to prospective home builders is to forgo more square footage for better advice, materials and design. An architect will ensure you have a really unique home that fits your lifestyle”

“I write very few reviews but the service I received from Cunningham | Quill Architects was so extraordinary that I feel compelled to share my experience. Ralph and his team worked with my family for almost two years to create our dream home. Through dozens and dozens of meetings, every member of the Cunningham | Quill team guided, listen and applied their remarkable talents to crafting our rough concepts into the most extraordinary residence. Every detail we ever imagined and many many more that we could not have dreamt of were flawlessly crafted by this team into a place that we hope to call home for the rest of our lives. Ralph oversaw the entire project from beginning to end and added his unique creativity throughout the process of creating the plans and then, on a weekly basis, through the 14 month construction. Sarah took our quaint Cape Cod home in North Arlington and made it into a beautiful home for a growing family. We told Sarah how we wanted to keep the charm and curb appeal that fit the neighborhood, and she surpassed our expectations. “I was living in a dated condo made up of a series of rooms complete with a totally enclosed kitchen. When the dishwasher failed, I finally decided to take on a renovation that would transform my condo into more of an open concept arrangement. I hired Runningdog Architects to explore what could be done with the space. The result was a wonderful modernization of my home. With smart but simple moves, the entire character of my home was transformed from a series of enclosed rooms to a sequence of open spaces and captured views. The new arrangement is simultaneously set up for formal entertaining and easy living. Runningdog Architects was there from the initial concept sketches all the way through construction, always making the process as easy as possible for me.
