I have a black terrazzo bowl with fish in it which is at the entrance of the house. It gets afternoon sun. What can I put around it? I thought mondo grass but that's a bit boring. And on the other garden beds are gardenias so want to keep the theme.
put a waterlily and some water iris in the pond to give the fish some shelter (heron just cleaned out my net covered 10 year old goldfish from 2 separate ponds in one afternoon). You don't say where you are but I'd be popping in a couple of sasanqua camelias (can take the sun) and to match the gardenia foliage. A japanese maple to lean across the pond to give a bit of shade might be good, Some nandina to echo the reds of the maple. Oh the joy of an empty garden bed.
Get a handful of duckweed from somewhere for your pond. Fish nibble on it (it is excellent for koi and goldfish -v.healthy). Using layers (some tall and short plants) will help create microclimates that will let you grow greater diversity.
