Need help for garden design in shady spot Upper Blue Mountains.

We are in the Upper Blue Mountains in Australia and we have a very shady front garden, under the shade of 2 large evergreen conifer trees and a deciduous Liquidamber tree. We are trying to choose a design of plants for a raised garden that is under these trees and north-west facing (see photo). It currently has a couple of hydrangeas, and a few iris. We are also trying to decide on best solution for the design of a pathway that slopes downwards between the previous garden bed and one opposite. This area is currently bare earth (see photo). Lots of pine needles drop in this section of garden, and lots of liquidamber leaves in autumn. Most of our garden contains exotic plants eg: rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias etc. Any ideas gratefully received.
