Needing a WOW factor for our living room
Comments (55)The vertical blinds MUST go. Sorry, but they are hideous and add nothing. Get some fabulous mid century fabric pattern in some gorgeous colours and make curtains. You can make a couple of scatter cushions also out of this fabric. Then pick out your favourite colour from the fabric to add some plain cushions. If you have gone with the patterned rug option such as asquithoatley has suggested, then just pick out the gentler colour for plain curtains to compliment the rug. Either way then choose cushions using any, or all of these colours. Then you should look for some decorative items in these colours such as beautiful bottles that might pick up an aqua, or some lamps with bases that colour to put on a side board. For the wall I suggest that you look on ebay in mid century modern and see if any wall sculptures attract you. There was quite a fad for enamelled metal wall sculptures back in the 60s which would add some life. Try to find one that also incorporates one of the pattern colours. Susan_66 made a great suggestion with a Howard Arkley print of a mid century house. You might even find one that is similar to your house style which would be fun. Happy hunting. You have some good pieces and they will work well with a bit of fun fabric or rug to link them....See MoreMy living room needs help!
Comments (9)Thank you everyone for your suggestions! My concern with adding a small dining area is that we probably won't use it as we use the bar for meals with friends. I agree the lounges are quite large. A single lounge would look better. However we can't justify buying just one for this house when we might move into a bigger house in the future. The new lounges will be the same size as the current blue ones just a bit shorter if that helps to visualise. The new ones are raised creating a perception of space. They are more modern looking so hoping they won't look so bulky. Also in the unit is x2 small-medium bedrooms (we use one as a study with 2 desks), a laundry, bathroom and courtyard. The square area before the kitchen bar is 4.2m by 4.8m. The new couches are W 2.14m, D 1.04m, H 80-97. I measured and the recliners won't hit eachother if they are placed in L shape :). Have included photo of view out window - the bushes need a trim to let more light in. We have skylights so lighting is not a huge concern but always a fan of a good lamp for mood lighting! Any more suggestions??...See MoreFurniture placement for a difficult living room
Comments (10)By closing up the doorway betwen the living room and the study/dine will make both rooms function better. Limit access to the living room to only the doorway from the entry hall. Angle the TV into the corner between the window and the doorway. On the diagonally opposite corner you can have an L-shape arrangement for seating which is facing towards the window/TV and entry. The study will be more private with only one doorway coming off the kitchen, and separate from TV noise. Comments (3)where does the short hallway lead and is it possible to remove that wall? with small children i would be keep as much clear floor area as possible with easy access to storage for games and toys and there appears to be enough space for two x three seater lounges and two small armchairs (that can be easily moved into different locations and but having furniture with open legs instead of covered to the floor and small coffee tables and/or foot stools will help the space feel less crowded...See MoreKate
