I think on many grounds, gas beats wood . If it helps make you more confident with your decision, I found this a useful article: Wood vs gas In the end, it's no-one's decision but yours (+/- partner's), if you are happy that you have researched it thoroughly and considered it from all angles, and you like the look of it, go for the gas. I would say that , as much as I love the look of my wood fire, I have stayed in lots of cold places with gas fires, and I love NOT having to bother with wood and cleaning out the ash, and stray bits of burning wood leaping out on to me when putting in a fresh log. The quickness and convenience of gas is very appealing.

Log vs gas fireplace

If you get good dry wood and for the right price I'd go with wood everytime. It burns hot, dry and clean. However not everyone has the ability to get the wood, nor has time to stack, bring it inside, etc.. I'd have a wood fire for the look and feel but just use it occasionally if regular wood supply is not possible. Electric reverse cycle is very efficient now and even better when used with solar power. Gas was the way to go for heating up until a few years ago now its back to electric again.... Keep the open fire and have electric reverse cycle as well! I'd keep the chimney but add some corbel's to it. Maybe the blue feature brick like on the window sills. You could make the chimney a feature rather than trying to do the opposite.

thoughts on my fireplace

a_m_b_a Firstly, I would start with the cheapest option. Give the fireplace a lick of paint. You can do this yourself at a minimal cost and this may give you the look you're after. If it doesn't, then you haven't wasted a lot of money on cladding, render or anything else you may be thinking of. Secondly, don't touch the pelmets. Paint them yes so they don't stand out as much, but pelmets are there for more than just hiding curtain rods. They actually help circulate the air in the room as well as help minimise heat loss. If they aren't a sealed pelmet, I would look at sealing them. Also get rid of the blinds ans install some heavy curtains. This will also stop heat loss through your window. Other than those two things, have a look at some of the images on Houzz to give you an idea of what you can do. The window seat is a fantastic idea and I would definitely put one in. Most of all have fun with it. Don't be scared to try something different. Whatever you do, can always be changed if you don't like it. I know this isn't everyone's taste, but I would possibly go with a bright coloured paint as well. Make it a focal point of the room, instead of just a heating element. Going a bright orange or lime green would really set it off. Enjoy... Giuliano green design & consulting

Wood heater in fireplace
Q

Stanislas Piechaczek A wood heater with a fan built into a chimney breast is a great addition to a room and makes a great focal point. Work out the m2 of the space you need to heat to make sure you choose the right one for the job. Some options have a zero clearance firebox meaning you can frame up next to the heater. Check the specs to see what the options are flues. Here are a couple of options http://www.pivotstove.com.au/catalogue/wood/inbuilt-zero-clearance-wood depending on floorplan and budget, there are double sided wood burners from Axis You can plan to have built in joinery as part of the fireplace area to complete the feature. Best wishes
