Area rug under dining table or not?

What's your opinion for decorating a meals area opposite a kitchen?

The kitchen has an island bench with barstools. The floor is made of dark merbau floorboards. The dining table is opposite the kitchen island and is made of Tasmanian oak with a light stain. This is the sole meals area for the house. The other side of the dining table are large sliding doors looking out onto a lovely outdoor view. Next to the dining table is a sideboard made of matching wood and stain as to the table. Chairs are black leather with light-coloured wooden legs.

Question: Should an area rug be placed under the dining table or not?

(note: the photo below is not of actual kitchen, but simply an example)
