Comments (27)Tribbletrouble, thanks so much for the info, it's great to know that there's a bit of a black trend happening, as the black accessories... Handles, lights, sink, legs were what we really liked when choosing but now seeing it all together it's taking a while to get used to. Like you said though. I probably just need to get the furniture and laying done. Really appreciate your thoughts, links and suggestions :)...See MoreKitchen counter / island bench layout - your thoughts please
Comments (15)Hi Lil, I believe your original plan works much better than the revised version. While the notion of ideal working widths is great, the larger problem here is the post. I worked on a project very similar to this last year where a post could either be connect to, or separate from the island. What we found was that by separating the island the space between island and post became very awkward. It's not enough of a space to comfortably walk through or be seated at the island in front of. Instead of your room feeling open and generous in proportion, it is going to start to feel cramped and awkward. We have a kitchen in our showroom (Kitchen Studio Tauranga NZ) with a 6ft gap between bench and back wall and it works wonderfully. It allows someone to work at the sink and a second at the island with ease. Stick with the original plan. It will feel a lot more spacious, without compromising work flows....See MoreNeed help with support for a Stone bench in an office situation.
Comments (12)Hi, I have just installed a long span stone bench with an 80mm edge detail for a kitchen bench. Because it was over span and very heavy, we had to support both the weight of the stone and the possibility that someone would sit on the kitchen bench (not something everyone considers). We just designed a steel tube frame to be concealed within the cabinetry and behind the fascia panel, bolted to the floor with a couple of horizontal bars to support the overhang. We used a 40 x 40 steel tube and I got a local welder to make it up for us. You wouldn't need that big a tube. In your case, the support required is quite substantial because of the overall span along two axis. You have a couple of options here... 1. put a leg in 2. use the brackets as your stone mason had shown 3. create a concealed frame (will require a thicker edge detail) spanning from the cupboards at either end and bolted to the wall at the back edge. It could be as simple as this and could probably be done out of 25mm x 25mm square tube. Cheers......See MoreHelp with changing the island bench
Comments (11)it should be quite easy to change the size of the base cabinets to create knee space..usually about 30cms deep...i would expect a deeper counter would be the easiest (but a bigger piece of stone may be challenging and you might have to consider an alternative counter material) so consult a kitchen cabinet maker for specific advice and quotes and they should be able to reuse the existing sink, taps, doors and some or all of the cabinets for two options : a new smaller base cabinet or a deeper counter so ask for quotes on both options but first line up some chairs to decide if the bigger counter is comfortable in your room...See MoreOntra Stone Concepts
