Probably comes down to your budget. A herringbone pattern would add interest, but may be more costly to lay than a stack pattern. It’s the colour of the paving bricks against your home that would be worth more consideration.

If you mean a product similar to below. Then in my opinion yes, they are a very personal choice. It doesn’t matter where they are, it depends on what colour is on the walls around them. Will they stand out and be too much, or are your walls and greenery something that the pavers will blend in with? When you say a small courtyard, do you mean a 2 metre square or a bigger area?

Looking for a free program or suggestion on how I could plan the design for my paver area. I want to put a chess board in the area with pavers and need to plan it out. have been trying to use a word document but tedious and results are less than satisfactory. Anyone got a suggestion on how to design the on paper using an app or program. thanks

Today I’ve gone and bought road base, manual tamper and concrete mix bags so I can do this properly. My question here is, a lot of places mention haunching edges as a way to keep pavers in place. If I was haunching both sides of each paver, do I still need concrete mix underneath each paver (that connects to haunches sides so all connected as one?), is is it sufficient to have the compacted road based, some bedding sand to level pavers, and haunch edges all the way vertically on driveway ? (Obviously asking this given pavers will have 50mm spacing rather than all butted up against each other). Thanks again J
