I don't mind it. I think you have the basis for a very opulent room if you embraced it. I would consider leaving the wall paper, but painting the other walls a dark charcoal or navy (whatever the background colour of the wall paper is). I would also turn the tall boy around so that it is against the window wall. Maybe add a nice mirror above it or two small framed pictures. I would get an opulent lamp for the bedside table, maybe something like a Tiffany lamp. And I would get some complimentary bed linen, possibly picking up the pink/peach colour of the birds in the wall paper or maybe the green of the leaves in the wall paper. With the dark upholstered bed head and bench seat, I think you should keep the bedding a little lighter (especially if you paint the other walls). Obviously, a bit of a declutter and general tidy would also help pull the room together.

Wow Lynda your spaces have great proportions to work with! Country classic with high ceilings & a raw edginess to boot, It could be anything from French provincial to Industrial with classic stone & brick. I'm thinking stone on the steps & floors, white on the wall to the right or an amazing wallpaper & black or white accent furniture & lights. Maybe a chandelier & a beautiful rug under the piano if it is staying there. Keep the brick as it is, great spaces! Depends what style you like... country, classic, industrial, eclectic or other? Plus whether you want to make it light & bright , dark & moody or somewhere in between..

Japanese!! Yes; now you've said that I can't believe that hadn't dawned on me before, but it's probably why I chose it in the first place. I do have a love of Japanese styling and there's quite a bit of it in other rooms of the house. The bedhead is a neutral linen so I think I could get away with some subtle Japanese styling around it. I like the idea of paper lampshades and Japanese style side tables. Thank you.

Hi jdublya, happy new year and sorry about the late reply! I ended up doing the safe / lazy thing... left the floor untouched and painted a feature wall deep grey, as well as having two-toned grey curtains to both the sliding doors, and a dark grey area rug. The open plan living / dining gets lots of light, so it's still bright even with all the dark greys. We've paired it with mismatched sofas in light grey and brown, and sage green throws. Overall, it's still a "warm" look and not the cool Scandi look I would have preferred, but it's cozy and the greys have really calmed down the red. It's a lot more to my taste now than the show room furniture was. Bits of the floor finish are coming off though, I think (where the kitchen island stools have been dragged over the years by the past occupant), so in time I will get the opportunity to re-do the floor and it'll no longer be red!
