Render lower facade
In keeping with the Hamptons look for our home I would like some advice as to whether the bricks should be rendered or left as they are?
Exterior colour will obviously be very light naturals.

4 years agoIf you go on American real estate sites, for true hamptons homes, you will find that there is a lot of homes that are brick. I would be removing all the awnings and upstairs balustrade first. Leave the brick, paint the upstairs panelling, replace the balustrade (unless you really like it) and if required replace the awnings with a uniform look. The balustrade and awning on the second story has a more 'inner city terrace' look in my opinion. By the way this home is USD$39,500,000!! Definitely not in our budgets.

Need help to choice brick and render colour for front facade

Comments (13)I think you will get more bang for your street appeal Reno buck from refreshing garage door, and awnings, and some landscaping: perhaps even a timber pergola style entry way to add some visual interest. Pressure cleaning roof, paving as well will give it all a lift. You can always change you mind and render later. Comments (9)Hi Emma, in response to your two questions 1) You can paint aluminium window frames with the right preparation, however, it gets tricky where the windows open and are in contact with another part of the frame. Your windows look like they are sliding windows, so they will be hard to paint, where they slide in the track. Even if you can paint all of the window frames the new paint is likely to chip where it slides. Being old aluminium frame windows they will be very poor at controlling heat loss and gain (as the window frame conducts the heat) so I would suggest that you save your dollars and replace them with something more energy-efficient. Many windows are made to standard sizes based on brick opening dimensions so keep an eye out for new/old stock, and wrongly ordered window sizes that are for sale on eBay and Gumtree to match your window opening sizes. 2) Your sill bricks are probably cored (with holes running through them) or have recessed "frogs" on the top face. These holes or recesses are concealed in the way that they are laid. If you slice your sill brick diagonally to flatten out the front in line with the wall then they will be exposed and look really bad. There are lots of other more cost-effective ways to work with what you have and improve the look of your home. Comments (20)my suggestions includes cleaning all the brick walls and paving and repair any damaged pointing and grout, extending the roof sideways over a new garage without the Dutch gable, clean and paint the roof tiles in a mid colour or consider replacing tiles with Colorbond Steel for a more long lasting fix and opportunity to upgrade roof insulation, replace gutters in a dark colour and downpipes to match the brick colour, replace the steel fence with simple horizontal rails (and/or raise a solid brick fence to maximum height and render in the darkest fence colour) add Plantation shutters or venetians to allow light inside while retaining privacy and use Kate's idea of the pergola across the rear, add generous outdoor furniture to make an outdoor entertaining area, paint the garden retaining walls and fences in a darker version of the new gutter colour and fill the garden beds with shrubs to block out fences and neighbouring houses, keep the big palms and add some big shrubs and more palms to the front yard and paint the front door in the darkest version of the new gutter colour and what are the flat panels on the outside rear wall??...See Moredreamer
4 years agoThis would be more the balustrade style. And colouring if you wanted to paint bricks. I would leave bricks until everything else is finished, then you will really know whether you prefer painted or not.
