Comments (12)Hi Houzz Friends I have finally moved into my new home and I have 2 photos. I will be sanding back my dining room suite and entertainment unit to bare wood, colour suggestions? to go with my timber look floor?? Keep it Natural or stain it in a darker colour? My Kitchen bench is a dark grey and I have 4 wooden stools in a dark brown which seem to go with flooring. Suggestions please...See Morefurniture Layout ideas please
Comments (5)Hi Mitchell, Nice one on the finding your first proper home! How exciting to start with a blank canvas of sorts :) The other commenters so far have fair points re. intended use for the space and future renovation plans. I wouldnt rush into moving any walls for a while until your family gets a good feel of the place. Temperature/sunlight/traffic flow/recreational needs all play a part and can take a year or two to establish properly. But I digress! Without seeing photographs of the space, from the floor plan info, I would recommend to a client to set up an entertainment hub of sorts backing onto to the kitchen wall for now, with soft furnishings facing the area in an Lshape in front (but not against) the windows (unless there is an especially good view out of them). A large table in the dining nook will get plenty of use, whether for dining or just a cosy corner for sewing/homework/art etc. Enjoy getting to know your new home!!...See MoreCreative Design and Layout ideas for dining room
Comments (29)Having the dining table on front of the windows like you suggested won’t be an option I think. We tried and it looks awkward especially because we won’t get a 3 Meter table in there without looking overly crowded. Additionally we were thinking dying sliding doors towards the garden there and having an outdoor lounge area. The dining table would then block access. However we noticed that off cantering the dining table under the bulkhead doesn’t look too bad. And a solution for the dining table light could be a straight light with two suspensions left and right of the bulkhead....See MoreNeed kids' room/dining room help
Comments (8)Colour in photos can be tricky, but it appears your red timber floors are fighting with your brick and other timber items. Are they solid timber? Is sanding them back and staining, if their natural colour doesn’t appeal / complement, an option? Conversely, play to the red and grey scheme with lightly patterned grey / red / white or grey / navy / white curtains. Hang them high and a bit wider than the span to give a luxe look. And perhaps, if you go this way, finish your existing timber furniture in a grey wash or stain. Painting your brick is an option, as is cladding all or some in plaster or a simple panelling. I love the MCM chair you have in the playroom, and I’m a fan of mixing styles, but I’d replace it with a bucket chair or two in a different, to the curtains, but complementary colour patterned fabric. Once you’ve got your basics giving a more harmonious feel, start layering with artwork, throws, an ottoman or two, lighting etc. It takes time to develop a room / home. Don’t rush, chose your colour scheme and furnishing style and gradually move in that direction. Stick pretty much to the 70/20/10 rule and browse the Houzz lookbooks for inspiration, and importantly, trust yourself. After all, we all manage to dress ourselves without causing too many raised eyebrows, no reason we can’t transfer our good taste to our home 😉...See Moreeverdebz
