Thin kitchen countertops in the Boston area?

I'm interested in getting a thin countertop for my kitchen. I've visited and called 5 places close to Boston and it's like I'm asking them to put the counter on the ceiling, none of them seem to understand why anyone would ever want something less than 3cm or (more importantly) how anyone could possibly create such a monstrosity.
Oddly, the only place offering anything like what I want is home Depot with Thinscape, but I don't like the colors.
Has anyone been able to find a business that is able to make and install a thin countertop in the Boston area?

What material are you thinking of? And how thin? Any laminate shop should be able to give you a 3/4" or maybe 5/8" thick plywood with laminate. I doubt 1/2" would be sufficiently stable. Solid wood would be fine at that thickness, a stainless top on plywood would also work. Coarian could be made that thin at the edges, but would almost certainly need structural shoring up to keep from sagging.

I'd think any kind of stone or tile will require continuous solid 3/4" ply tops for your cabinets and little or no overhangs. That can be done, but one really wonders why saving a cm or two of thickness would be worth that kind of effort and expense. I'd expect to have to sign some big time disclaimers of any warranty for any natural or synthetic stone at that thickness.

I'm fine with any material as long as it's not the cheap laminate I have now and it comes in a mostly solid black or dark grey.

I don't need large overhangs and would be fine with the countertop flush to the cabinets if possible (seems unlikely around here though).

Your points all sound reasonable, but I know these things do exist, at least on the internet and Europe, but maybe not in real life? Wilson art Thinscape comes in 1/2 inch

Astraea, when I emptied mum's unit, I just absolutely turned everything upside down and inside out. Luckily I found money in the first drawer I opened that put me on my guard. Talking about going out in the car reminded me - mum had a disabled parking sticker that had to be attached to the windscreen if the car she was in was parked in a disabled parking area. When she came to live with me I kept it in the glovebox of my car at the ready, but somewhere along the line when mum had first got the sticker someone must have given her very clear instructions to ensure she kept the sticker with her at all times as they were readily stolen. Obviously whoever had explained said that it had to be displayed on the windscreen when the car was parked, but mum, in the fog she was in by this time, didn't get that bit. One time I had to go to the RTA to have mum's address changed to mine so of course I had to take her with me for her to verify things. I parked in a disabled spot as they are wider for wheelchair access, put the sticker on the windscreen, got the wheelchair out of the boot and got mum into it, not taking any notice of anything she was doing. We got into the RTA, took a number and waited a while before we were served, then I took mum over to the counter and explained the situation, whereupon mum pulls the sticker out of her handbag to show the clerk. Of course I freaked as they are very quick to book you if you are illegally parked in these spaces and told mum she wasn't to take it off the windscreen again. Mum felt she was really going to get one up on me as she was always going crook at me putting it on the windscreen for people to see it and break into the car to steal it, and told the clerk to tell me the rules how I wasn't to leave it in the car. I think the poor woman wet herself seeing the comedy side of it, but trying to keep a straight face while she tried to get through to mum that it had to be on the windscreen. Of course mum just kept arguing with her then that she knew better because of what she had been told. In the end the clerk told me to get back to the car before I got booked but said to let her know if I was and she would try to clear things for me. Fortunately I wasn't but after that I had to be so careful to ensure I put the sticker on my side of the car (which it wasn't supposed to be) but it was the only way I could stop mum getting to it.

mforr - It's funny you should mention that, because I just looked at the map of queens, trying to remember the name of the highway that went thru a friend's neighborhood like that .. and I think they renamed it! There used to be an "Interboro Parkway", and now it's called the "Jackie Robinson Parkway"! Wikipedia says it was renamed in 1997 .. who knew?! Wow thanks Joseph. Yes I'm in Australia Victoria. I can get the mix just down the road from home. I have researched a bit and found that using malumine as the bottom of the mold is best but I have not heard of the vasoline and plastic but am definitely looking forward to a glass smooth surface. Is the flat sheet plastic something you would use as a garden liner to stop weeds from growing through? Just something you get from your local hardware store? I'm assuming that this is what the malumine would be used for I'm not sure. Thanks so much for the hot tips but I have my own hair dryer cause I'm the wife ha ha. I really appreciate your time. Look forward to any photos though.

I also think matte black handles will work well. They are simple and elegant and won't reflect light as the S/S ones do. If and when you add a pendant light (down the track), I think your focus on the handles will diminish. It's possible a suspended ceiling will complicate the look of your kitchen. What is the height of your ceilings? And a suspended ceiling would lower the height to what? Painting the ceiling sounds like an alternative and would certainly add interest. Your kitchen IS beautiful as is. Pls keep us posted!

there's a super thin stone from a domestic quarry - called polycor

1 CM thick. Very cool. Not inexpensive - but fits your needs - has a backing allowing it to be unsupported like thicker stone.

@just_janni Yes, I did find that on the internet, but all the countertop people around here have never heard of it and basically just can't understand why anyone would ever want anything but the thickest countertop they can afford

I got samples of the polycor - it's cool. Supply is limited. I am considering building a counter / desk in front of a large window with a horizontal divider and just having metal brackets at each side wall so that it virtually disappears if there is no chair there.

It's a more modern aesthetic to go with something that thin (also any of the sintered stone products) but there is demand. I have had 2CM granite in my current home for 25 years - love the lesser visual weight of it for my style

We have 2 cm dekton and i like the appearance. lots of options if you can accept 2 cm…

Corian also comes in 2cm. I too like the appearance of a thin counter.
