Kitchens Lighting

Choosing entryway light by the kitchen.

Working on our summer home. Kitchen will arrive soon. Thinking of rattan over the island and glass pendant at the sink. My front door is at the immediate left of the kitchen. What style of light would be best?

With the 3 lights in such close proximity I think they definitely need to be same style if not identical. The 2 lights you show may be candidates but they’d be an either / or - the casual natural rope looking one or the more formal glass one - not both & with a 3rd different one in the actual entry. Way too busy. The kitchen mock up looks more formal so of the 2, my pick would be the glass one for kitchen - one over sink, two over island. What’s the ceiling height in space? Width of entry? Might want a larger one in entry - does that light have other size options or even a semi flush option?

Kitchen is going to be wonderful and given pictures shown, I would avoid any natural materials since grease will collect on them no matter what and not be cleanable. I suggest using white and black for clean but interesting look that will pair with any furniture you might be using.

I have thought about some sort of white cabinetry too but could it look a little odd with the rest of the house, as the house is rustic? My second thought was maybe oak cabinets with a light granite bench top, which would be the safer but maybe not so modern? I really don't like the look of painted bricks. I have seen some very nice brick wall kitchens on Houzz but my kitchen seems to have more bricks then most and a lot of the kitchens in Houzz mix plaster in the room, which looks amazing but I can't do that. I have found a great fabricator for the granite. I have also found that granite isn't much more expensive then Engineered Stone so I would rather go for the real thing.

Your house is being illuminated like an office space. I'd put recessed track down the hall (maybe 2 strips, one in the gallery and another infront of the cupboard). That way you can adjust the lighting to suit art etc. You don't need allot of light in circulation spaces, and ideal area to highlight elements), in fact, there's allot of light (and power points) in this plan. Judging by the location of the ceiling power for your garage, the panel lift door will obscure the batten light when open. Is there enough room for the light to clear the mechanics of the garage door opener? I'd question the builder/sparky, ensure the switches to the bathroom will fit to clear the shower and any door mouldings. As a side note, is there opportunity to build in niches for the hallway door to open into

Your kitchen is a good size but not huge so I would go with gloss white to match in with your lovely fridge. All white appliances. Light coloured bench top in the grey range. Backsplash, I'd go to tile expo, choose something you love and add some colour behind the stove, the rest of the splashbacks behind the sink etc in white subway tiles. Dark floors as you have chosen, all the walls in the house Dulux Whisper White. This is a great colour to go with everything, i use it all the time in my designs.

When choosing a front door just don't consider the door, but the whole door frame. Often sidelight and highlight windows can contribute to the appeal of the entry, and bring lots of light into your entry hall, even when your door is closed. You will also need to consider the proportion of the door width to the height. I think that a standard 820mm wide door that is 2700mm high looks too skinny. If you are going for a high door then it should be proportionally wider. Here is a photo of a custom made timber door that is 3 metres tall, and 1.2m wide in Blackbutt which weights 130kgs. When you get to this size and weight then you need to consider the hinging carefully. The door was crafted and installed by Dr Retro's friends at Sawdust Timber Furniture. Expensive, but worth every dollar as it makes such a great impression.

Flo Mangan, thank you for the visuals. I will look and see if the ceiling light will work for angled ceiling as this is a vaulted room with 9' walls. At the door I am about 10'.

KW, thank you for your reply. Was sure hoping to mix it up a bit but the close proximity had me wondering.

9' ceilings, vaulted (about 10' at light) with 36" door opening.

Agree no soft/natural material in kitchen unless you never cook. Pendants in kitchen get icky pretty fast. I like the look you're going for in a summer home but I'd vote no on the rattan, too.

Now that you have posted some ceiling details you need chandeliers (fixtures) on chains with enough length to hang lights at proper height.

FWIW, we avoided clear glass shades with our pendants because we felt they might put off too much glare for our liking. Just something to think about. Also, consider using dimmable lighting for your pendants if you have that option. I love that ours can be task or mood / ambient lighting depending on need and time of day.
