Windows replacement

Hey professionals,
My timber windows are over 30 years old and are causing significant leaking issues. I’m planning to replace them with aluminium windows, but I’m unsure whether to choose Monument or White for the colour. Our home gets a lot of sunlight, so I’d like to know what type of glass would best. Could you also explain what is involved in the window replacement process?

You will want double glazing and prob a tint on western windows. Monument would look more modern. But you have white trim elsewhere.

Thanks everyone for your ideas. To answer a few questions, the main things we are looking to do are to add value to the house (by increasing the size of the carport, improving alfresco area and bringing the laundry into the house) and increase the light into the house (by replacing an existing run-down flat-roof alfresco with a pitched roof, replacing walls with glass windows and doors). @MB Design & Drafting - The dashed line is the shared driveway (strata property). Good idea about swapping the laundry and bathroom, however I have hesitations about the bringing laundry noise into the middle of the house. I agree about the budget being a bit small, so I think we will concentrate on those things that will add value to the house and cut back on some wish-list items. Any thoughts on the layout of the living/kitchen areas? Thanks again.

If the frame is coming apart it can be screwed back together. Take out all the old putty, if its in poor condition and replace. Sand lightly and repaint. Or you could go slightly nuts and strip all the paint off the window frame and varnish! You would fine lovely timber underneath. In Queensland its usually silky oak or cedar.

i have to say that paying cash for a job so that the worker can avoid including payment for their tax and GST is illegal and party to fraud ..the extra payment is not for your invoice it's a savings for you so that they don't have to include the payment or GST in their income for tax and i think that expecting a quality job for work for which you haven't received an invoice or receipt is unlikely and they've already produced bad workmanship twice... i wonder if they repaired the dampproofing and flashing around the window and if you will have a similar problem in future?..i would patch up the grout and clean off the tiles and keep an eye on the wall so that if/when the leak returns you're ready to employ a professional to do a quality job

Second light is the Umage asteria up light, this one is the Nordic style flush mount by Luna home decor, the wall lights are flush wall sconces, Beacon lighting have similar, light in the box, love the hallway sconces, you can get these from most lighting retailers in Australia. Great ambience.

Hi Magdoline are you sure your windows are Leaking and this is not actually condensation pooling; considering you have no blinds or curtains as window treatments? Timber windows are designed with rebates and should not physically leak. The top section of the bay-window over the kitchen could potentially leak if its seals have perished, but this can be fixed economically without having to replace the window frame or the glass.

If this is a condensation issue due to the cold weather and not leakage and you want to continue without window treatments then you could opt for adding daily drying to your routine, or consult a glazier about possibly installing Double Glazed Glass Panels in your existing timber frames and replacing the existing Aluminium Sliding door with a new double glazed door.

All this will be far less expensive than full window replacements, will preserve the character of your home and preserve its value of having Timber Window frames, and will have less environmental impact due to less waste.

Replacing old timber windows with aluminium is a solid choice, especially if you’ve been dealing with leaks. In terms of colour, both Monument and White work well. Monument gives a modern, sleek look that hides dust and weathering, while White feels brighter and more classic but does show marks more easily.

For glass, since your home gets a lot of sunlight, I’d recommend looking at Low-E or tinted glass to help with heat control and UV protection. Double glazing can also make a big difference in energy efficiency and comfort.

The replacement process generally involves measuring up the openings, carefully removing the old timber frames, preparing the surrounds, and then installing the new aluminium frames with proper sealing to stop future leaks. A good glazier will also ensure compliance with building standards and leave everything neat and finished.

A friend of mine had a similar job done recently through Haines Glass and said they were great at walking through the options and making it straightforward. Might be worth getting a quote so you can compare.
