Fringe Dweller’s sculpted extension transforms an unassuming weatherboard cottage into a proud forever home. It walks multiple tightropes at once: balancing openness with privacy, strength with softness, and a rich history with our clients’ future needs. On Clifton Hill’s suburban edge, the house sits opposite the leafy Quarries Park Reserve. Our clients, Ishtar and Craig, have three children and purchased their cottage to create a long-term family home. Lying within a heritage overlay, the cottage’s traditional layout is largely preserved – only tweaked, in a wise parenting move, to form three equally sized bedrooms. The extension’s shared spaces feature rich materials, a warm palette and curved edges, creating a feeling of softness and easing transitions between zones. A staircase arcing through the living areas leads up to the lounge and main suite. Elevated above street level, these spaces can more freely relate to the park: the lounge’s attached balcony overlooks the park’s open field, while the main bedroom’s floor-to-ceiling window frames magnificent foliage. Downstairs, sliding doors connect the living areas to a semi-covered deck, while the garden beyond is embraced by a self-contained studio at the rear and high walls on either side. A brick wall interspersed with permeable screens lines the site’s public edge, balancing backyard privacy with neighbourhood connection. For passers-by, it’s a strong addition to the streetscape, granting glimpses of the lush garden within. Fringe Dweller embraces its presence on the fringe of the parklands, balancing its historical context with its future as a nurturing family home.

Our client had impeccable taste, and with our joint collaboration we were able to deliver a truely remarkable family home.

This renovation transformed the kitchen into a family and social-focused hub, designed for both everyday living and entertaining. With clever storage solutions, including a corner larder and ample drawers, the space is practical, organised, and perfect for bringing family and friends together.

Designed with family in mind for kitchen extension. Custom made kitchen, handcrafted at our workshop in Guildford, Surrey. Every inch of storage was thought through. There are 24 drawers, a breakfast pantry and glazed drinks bar cabinet. The oak table was designed and stained to bring the whole scheme together with the vintage Barristers Bookcases, a much loved family heir loom.

Burlanes were commissioned to design, create and install a fresh and contemporary kitchen for a brand new extension on a beautiful family home in Crystal Palace, London. The main objective was to maximise the use of space and achieve a clean looking, clutter free kitchen, with lots of storage and a dedicated dining area. We are delighted with the outcome of this kitchen, but more importantly so is the client who says it is where her family now spend all their time. “I can safely say that everything I ever wanted in a kitchen is in my kitchen, brilliant larder cupboards, great pull out shelves for the toaster etc and all expertly hand built. After our initial visit from our designer Lindsey Durrant, I was confident that she knew exactly what I wanted even from my garbled ramblings, and I got exactly what I wanted! I honestly would not hesitate in recommending Burlanes to anyone.”

Our client was undertaking a major renovation and extension of their large Edwardian home and wanted to create a Hamptons style kitchen, with a specific emphasis on catering for their large family and the need to be able to provide a large entertaining area for both family gatherings and as a senior executive of a major company the need to entertain guests at home. It was a real delight to have such an expansive space to work with to design this kitchen and walk-in-pantry and clients who trusted us implicitly to bring their vision to life. The design features a face-frame construction with shaker style doors made in solid English Oak and then finished in two-pack satin paint. The open grain of the oak timber, which lifts through the paint, adds a textural and visual element to the doors and panels. The kitchen is topped beautifully with natural 'Super White' granite, 4 slabs of which were required for the massive 5.7m long and 1.3m wide island bench to achieve the best grain match possible throughout the whole length of the island. The integrated Sub Zero fridge and 1500mm wide Wolf stove sit perfectly within the Hamptons style and offer a true chef's experience in the home. A pot filler over the stove offers practicality and convenience and adds to the Hamptons style along with the beautiful fireclay sink and bridge tapware. A clever wet bar was incorporated into the far end of the kitchen leading out to the pool with a built in fridge drawer and a coffee station. The walk-in pantry, which extends almost the entire length behind the kitchen, adds a secondary preparation space and unparalleled storage space for all of the kitchen gadgets, cookware and serving ware a keen home cook and avid entertainer requires. A contemporary kitchen distinguished by its soft pastel tones and luxurious walnut accents and, crafted to excite and delight family and guests alike. In-frame cabinetry with beaded-shaker doors is finished in pastel grey and natural walnut, hung on exposed butt hinges and paired with brushed brass knobs for a timeless yet stylish look. Crisp white stone worktops, upstand, and a full-height backsplash provide a clean foundation, while glazed upper cabinets and statement pendant lighting introduce brightness and contrast against the richness of the walnut. The kitchen is thoughtfully zoned for efficiency: food storage is consolidated between a large LG American-style fridge/freezer and tall pantry; cooking is centred around the substantial cream AGA beneath an oversized contemporary hood; and cleanup is streamlined with an undermounted sink flanked by an integrated dishwasher and generous pullout bins. The island provides expansive prep space alongside seating for casual dining, while a dedicated breakfast station houses tea, coffee, and small appliances, ensuring main worktops remain clear and uncluttered. The walnut breakfast station and pantry unit are striking centrepieces, showcasing dramatic bookmatched burl veneers with swirling, eye-like patterns—nature’s artistry framed within cabinet doors. Walnut is also found carefully layered throughout the design: the integrated bookshelf, bespoke wine rack, drawers, carcassing, and the island’s substantial countertop, creating warmth and texture while highlighting key features. The completed space seamlessly combines contemporary design with the artistry of natural materials. It is a kitchen of character and comfort, a luxurious yet liveable centrepiece to be the heart of the home.

Opting for a truly Scandinavian design, the owners of this home work in the design industry and wanted their kitchen to reflect their uber cool minimalistic style. To achieve this look we installed white cabinetry, oak skog panelling, Quartz Calcatta Gold worktops and various brass details. Behind the island features a large mirror which enhances the light and spacious feel of the room.

This bespoke professional cook's kitchen features a custom copper and stainless steel La Cornue range cooker and extraction canopy, built to match the client's copper pans. Italian Black Basalt stone shelving lines the walls resting on Acero stone brackets, a detail repeated on bench seats in front of the windows between glazed crockery cabinets. The table was made in solid English oak with turned legs. The project’s special details include inset LED strip lighting rebated into the underside of the stone shelves, wired invisibly through the stone brackets.
